The moral of the story is 3rd parties simply need to make games with Nintendo IPs to achieve success on Wii U.

We saw 3rd parties using Nintendo IPs on Gamecube and OG Wii as well. Many became million sellers.

Third party games can sell without a Nintendo IP if they are desirable enough, as we saw with games like Monster Hunter Tri, Resident Evil 4, Sonic Colours, and Goldeneye 007 on Wii. Problem is, nearly all the third party games on Wii U are either low priority ports, or just lack broad appeal.

I'd argue its the Wii U lacks broad appeal, the 3rd party software support was solid. Its obvious the people buying Wii U are primarily 1st party Nintendo fans. People who really want 3rd party games are buying Xbox or Playstation.

You ignore the most obvious reason OG Wii had multiple 3rd party million sellers. The OG Wii sold significantly better so it sold more software. If the CoD games on Wii U struggle to break 300K then there is little hope for most developers. They will instead focus on Xbox and Playstation.

Anyhow, Hyrule Warriors demonstrates Wii U owners will buy a game if it simply uses a Nintendo IP. 3rd party games that don't use a Nintendo IP actually need to great and still struggle to achieve numbers like Hyrule Warriors.

Dynasty Warriors 7

Samurai Warriors

Warriors Orochi

Dynasty Warriors Gundam 1 & 2 (inc PS2 versions)

One Piece Pirate Warriors

I may have forgotten some games, also some games I don't have sales figures for so can't confirm. And no, VGChartz is not the source. Koei is.

I hope they make a sequel and bring characters from outside of Hyrule, bring on characters from other Nintendo frnachuses, maybe Pit, Marth, Ike, Lucina, so on and forth, keep Mario out of it lol

Wouldn't it be better to make a Fire Emblem Warriors kind of game instead of trying to shoehorn these guys into Hyrule?

Impressive, that's what every third party devs should do on the wii U if they expect to have success

If you mean quality games, then yes. but I guess you mean nintendo spinoffs, wich is dead wrong.

Ho please, look at assassin's creed 3 and 4, call of duty black ops, injustice gods among us, darksiders 2 and many more, are all higher rated than hyrule warrior yet because they lack a major Nintendo character in them they all will never reach the same success that hyrule warrior has.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Isn't this old news?

Hyrule Warriors, the Wii U Legend of Zelda spinoff from Nintendo and Koei Tecmo that blends Zelda with Dynasty Warriors, has shipped more than one million units worldwide since its launch last fall.

Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu reported the figure this week, which Joystiq has since confirmed.

Koei Tecmo is marking the milestone by releasing a batch of new Hyrule Warriors wallpapers, which you can download from the game's website or view in the gallery below.

Nintendo and Koei Tecmo aren't finished supporting Hyrule Warriors just yet, as the game will introduce its latest expansion--the Majora's Mask Pack--on February 5. The $8 DLC includes two new characters--Tingle and Young Link--as well as a new Adventure Mode map and three extra costumes.

GameSpot gave Hyrule Warriors an 8/10 score. Reviewer Miguel Concepcion praised the game's balancing of Dynasty Warriors map management with Zelda-style objectives and said it delivered true Zelda fan service from beginning to end. You can read our full review here.

Impressive. So 1 million shipped, not sure of the sell through of that, probably quite good since I don't see many games anywhere... But I purchased my copy from the eShop, so I wonder how well it has done with that included. That's a pretty impressive number any way you look at it though.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Yep, just shove Zelda and Mario somewhere in the title and watch it sell :P

I think that has certainly helped without doubt, but I'm hoping it has opened more people up to the Warriors franchise as well. Good for Koei-Tecmo, good for Nintendo, and most importantly, good for fans/gamers.

No a 1000 times. I don't think anyone should have to explain something this simple but, same game with different character is still the same game.

That doesn't makes sense. For something to be shipped wouldn't it need to be physical? Seems like this might be a grey area.
