*cough* Pokemon *cough*

pokemon, admittedly, is your best argument if you plan on making the case that nintendo milks their franchises. i find that one original game (XY) plus a remake (ruby/sapphire) in a single generation isnt exactly the worst example of milking that this industry has seen. i could name five franchises that are more culpable than pokemon in that regard off the top of my head. HOWEVER, last generation with white/black, white2/black2.. THAT was goign completely overboard and reprehensible in my opinion. diamond/pearl/platinum +heart gold/soul silver were perfect for the DS, so i half way agree with you. but i think if they stick to the traditional way of doing it, then that is acceptable.

Well they aren't really done with the generation yet, fact is that they released a mainline Pokemon title every year since 2012 (if one of them is a remake really doesn't matter all that much, since people buy them just as much as the new games anyway) and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised, if there's one in 2015 as well. And you can also count the spin off Pokemon games, which there's always plenty off and which sometimes take the most ridiculous shapes, all just to make a quick buck of the Pokemon IP.

It's extremely difficult to make a case denying that Nintendo is massively flooding the market and milking the Pokemon IP.

Assuming they realize that they need to catch up to modern standards or risk becoming irrelevant, i agree, they'll probably be involved in gaming for the longest. It's their bread and butter after all. I don't expect any of them to leave for a very long time though.

That said, they aren't as invulnerable as the OT implies (intentionally or not). As the 8th gen has shown us, Nintendo are very much as the whims of the market as a whole. Their lack of relevance to the mainstream home console market, as well as the rapid growth of smart phones have resulted in some of their worst financial results in decades.

You 20m comment is somewhat baseless though. Nintendo have never sold only 20m units in a generation, and without them giving us a proper revenue break down of the GC we don't know if they could sustain themselves on an install base of only 20m. I highly doubt they could. They're too big to survive off a revenue steam that small (not without downsizing, anyway).

ok, i do concede the 20m consoles point. what i mean to say is that they dont need to sell, say, 80m every single time to survive. they can survive off a smaller install base than the competition, who really does need to sell 80m+ to consider sticking around. this is made easier by the fact that they make their own software which makes some of the highest sales every generation. but yes, they are affected by the industry more than what my original post implies. however, i believe that if everything crashed, they are the most fit to continue on, and have the highest chance of doing so. it seems most people agree to that.

I think Microsoft will last the longest and here is why:

1. Most financially stable thanks to other buisnesses.
2. Sony is not financially as stable.
3. I actually don't see Nintendo making another popular console and handhelds are a dying breed.

Yeah, Im sure no one in the first world countries were affected by the PS3 hack or the recent DDOS attacks...

There's a con to almost everything ...

Either you deal with a more expensive box or deal with online crap and content ownership ...

super punch out was a classic and felt like a huge step up in almost every category. i feel like the noise that it makes when you punch someone in that game is very satisfying and i never had any problems being able to tell what was going on lol. i like punch out for wii a whole lot, but it feels more like a remake than an actual next gen punchout that it should have been. it was very disappointing to me. i think their ONE new character was a riot and hilarious. i wish we could have saw more of that. every other character was a remake of the first game. its disappointng. you have to admit that more original characters would have made the game way more enjoyable.

I would love more new characters, but I wouldnt want to leave out anyone that was in it. If they make a new one, then sure. It was more of a reboot than a remake imo. Super Punch-Out!! was like the arcade games. Ive tried them and they are horrible. Never been a fan of the wire frame thing. It gets in the way of what the opponents are doing.

hmm.. im not discounting remakes, they do bring in revenue just as a new one does and i think that a remake of 10 year old title to accompany the new one is a welcome tradition. what is not a welcome tradition is the new titles that come out every year (white/black, black2/white2). i can say with 99% certainty that a new pokemon will not come out this year (well i guess i could see maybe a pokemon Z?). pokemon is a convoluted mess, but what you essentially have is two games. one is original and the other is a remake. i can see how someone could have a problem with how they split up those two games into five. people draw their lines in different places. i draw mine exactly there. if it goes beyond those five games, thats where i have a problem with what theyre doing. i can see how its annoying, and like i said, that is the nay-sayer's best example. nintendo really isnt guilty of it in any other franchise that i can think of.

if i had it my way, little mac wouldnt have been wire frame.. but super punch out was an actual evolution. i wanted to see the same kind of evolution in the wii version :(. BUT, they did nail the most important aspects: the gameplay mechanics. which is why i cant see giving this game lower than a  high 8. 8.7/8.8. it deserves a score of at least that high. i just feel like its really lacking when you consider the character roster and lack of innovative game modes.

I can't believe there's so much more voters for Sony than MS, tells alot about the site if you ask me.

I would say Nintendo simply because they seem to survive well. But they need to adapt fast and catchup.
Sony may not survive in the gaming industry, but PS could as a stand-alone Company or if somehow it's bought up.
MS has the money to continue with Xbox for as long as it wants. Even at times when it doesn't make money it would contribute to the whole MS brand.

Pokemon is your only exampe which makes your case weak.

That's Gamefreak.

well you have to consider the fact that microsoft has huge factions within the corporation that want to ditch xbox or keep it. phil spencer did a great job increasing the sales of the x1 this last holiday season, but there are still going to be many people who want to get rid of it all together and cut their losses with it. microsoft as a corporation is hugely divided over that division of their company. that really isnt a good sign in terms of the longevity of xbox consoles being made. also, sony has whittled down their company and relies more heavily on video games than ever before. so i can see why people would choose sony over microsoft.
