Forums - Gaming - three reasons nintendo will last longer in the video game space than microsoft or sony

who will last the longest?

nintendo 282 69.12%

microsoft 26 6.37%

sony 99 24.26%

Total:407

Well, since the NES days, Nintendo has never had a generation without less than 50million units of their hardware (any hardware, including home consoles, handhelds and other little experiments). I don't know if they would be able to profit enough from a 20m console. They would win money, but they need a lot of income, Nintendo is a really big company.

3rd gen. NES around 60 million units hardware
4th gen SNES around 50 million units + 1/2 GameBoy
5th gen N64 around 30 million units + 2/2 GameBoy (120m units in total)
6th gen GC around 20 million units + GBA 80 million units
7th gen Wii around 100 million units + DS 150 million units
8th gen WiiU around 8million units so far + 3DS 50 million units so far

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Easier than downloading a game...?

It probably could be easier than downloading a game ...

By streaming the game you don't have to worry about hardware capabilities of your box anymore as those things will be handled by some remote location streaming the game. You also don't have to worry about downloading the game itself since the game is running on the cloud so in the end it could potentially be more convenient ...

Not sure what you mean by that. Nintendo has been very agressive with digital games in the past few years.

If they're thinking about going 3rd party that would be good enough. I don't think they have what it takes to be fully digital as in streaming games anywhere you want.

Thats if you think streaming games are the future of the industry...

I do. Every piece of entertainment is heavily streamed besides gaming. In about 10 years I would think all internet providers will have super fast speeds for low costs. Which would make it an easier transition.

Damn. It's going to suck if there are ISP outages, or network hacks...

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Well with downloads you dont have to worry about your online connection while playing in SP.

Yes. I believe so.

I don't know that any of those things are true. Nintendo is just as quick to put a franchise on the shelf as anyone if sales disappoint, and although this could be more about cost of opportunity than games not being profitable, I don't think Nintendo games are as cheap to develop as you seem to.

We also don't know that Nintendo can be profitable off a 20 million install base because they've always had successful handhelds to carry their unsuccessful consoles. And by following their own path it's true that Nintendo is sometimes less affected by "craziness" in the industry than other companies, but this has a trade off because it also means that they sometimes see their business decline even when the industry as a whole isn't declining.

So I'd expect Nintendo to be in the console business longer, but because they are only a video game company and not a corporation that dabbles in video games like the other two.

yeah, nintendo does exactly what you said in the first paragraph. i feel that punch out for wii was not a true effort to deliver a "next gen" type of punch out experience. yes, it had motion controls and i think it worked pretty well for the most part, and was fun, which is a must of course.. but they didnt put the effort into making it better that they did when they made super punch out. super punch out on the snes was leaps and bounds above the original with new things you can do, new characters, new modes, etc.. but punch out wii felt almost like a remake.. and i feel that a similar thing can happen with star fox. they are giving us one because we have been clamoring for it for years, but if they treat it like punch out, then its going to be disappointing. so i do agree that they are certainly guilty of trying to be cost effective with some of these things, and its at the expense of giving us a true successor in a beloved franchise.

also, the fact that nintendo's business can decline even when the industry isnt is a good thing. the fact that they ultimately have control over their own business is a more comforting feeling than being subject to all these different forces that you dont necessarily have any control over at all.
