Forums - Gaming - Games that restrict you to ONE SAVE...why is this a thing?

Even worse is games that limit you to a single save AND don't allow you to copy them to another device.

I'm looking at you Fable and Mass Effect games.

That IS bad indeed. Capcom games for example, can not be copied on PS3 as well. Never tried Mass Effect though.

For Pokemon it is a thing, because otherwise everyone could get easily many legendaries.

They can make it so the game gives you a warning before you create a second save that says "If you create another save file you won't be able to trade" or something like that.  It sucks that I have to give up hundreds of hours to start a new game. I'd gladly trade trading (lol) to get multiple save files in this case.

That would be a possible solution to this problem, only the first save can trade.

As a programmer, I'll tell you that the more complex the game, the harder it will be for the developer to incorporate save files while avoiding bugs. They may have some other reasons as well, but I'm sure that one of the factors they base their decision on is how hard it will be to incorporate save files into a game versus how important they think it is to have save files in that particular game.

Dragons Dogma is another good example

Dragon's Dogma wants you to prevent exiting the game in case you fucked up. If you fuck up, the game will automatically save and you won't be able to do nothing to fix it unless you:

a) beat the game, start over again.

b) completely erase your save file.

Capcom took some cues from Animal Crossing :P

Wouldn't it be one save per character instead of 1 save at all then ?

Actually, there's two save files but one of them is kinda hidden. Whenever you would sleep at a inn or go inside of a rift crystal or if something important happened, it would do a checkpoint save. If you saved manually or it autosaved, it would do a regular save. You can choose the option of going back to your last checkpoint save or just reloading a regular save.

This is usually a phenomena associated with RPGs...where you can only have a single save file per system account.  Trying to start a new file on the same account gets a message similar to, "There is already a save file detected, saving/creating a new file will overwrite the existing file..."

Why?  Why is this a freaking thing?

Dont know about anythingother than Pokemon but i think for Pokemon's case, the first games were limited to it. After seeing sales and minor complaints, GF decided to make single save file permanent in every installment.

Dragons Dogma is another good example

Minecraft too. You get multiple worlds, but only one save file for each. Want to save? Have to overwrite. It's garbage and developers need to stop doing it imo.

The most egregious is Pokemon! The prevalence of hacked Pokemon is partially related to only having one save file. They rectified one of the causes this gen, that being ridiculous methods of EV training and identifying IVs.

Probably already been said but Pikmin 3

Sucks. I play my Vita at work all the time and people ask me to try it. Can't count how many times someone else to play Unit 13 or Assassin's Creed and I had to say no because they only had one save file. To this day, I haven't finished AC Liberation because my little girl stated playing it and playing it means erasing her data.

It is frustrating when a game does this, especially in games that have multiple pathes to take in dialogue or choices. Heck, some games with tons of replayability are already difficult to 100% when there are is more than one save file like Fire Emblem Awakening. It also means that I can't play Okamiden because my younger sister won't let me delete her save file.
