It would, but having more than one character per save would enter in conflict with the game's ending. :)

For Pokemon it is a thing, because otherwise everyone could get easily many legendaries.

If you log in in two different accounts, the saves should be distinct. Still it is a little annoyance to switch accounts.
well for some games you need to log on to a different accounts which is annoying as not everybody wants to create an account. they just want to go right in to it. Pikmin 3 had this and I hated Nintendogs for it as well as not being able to restart or erase the save file to start over.

I actually like that. The souls games do this and they force you to go through with the choices you've made in your progress. We'de just reload endlessly if that wasn't the case.

This might be the reason for some games. At least on some systems. Diffrent people should use diffrent accounts
I used to think it was due to save file size restrictions cause some games had save files that were pretty big but idk anymore. Wonky design choice would be my guess! Although, I do suppose that now a days, we do have different "profiles" that have saves based on profiles/accounts soo maybe thats why they are doing it

Even worse is games that limit you to a single save AND don't allow you to copy them to another device.
I'm looking at you Fable and Mass Effect games.

They can make it so the game gives you a warning before you create a second save that says "If you create another save file you won't be able to trade" or something like that. It sucks that I have to give up hundreds of hours to start a new game. I'd gladly trade trading (lol) to get multiple save files in this case.
