Forums - Gaming - MS Exclusive Third Party Advertising No Longer Makes Sense.

No, it's logic. As a third party developer, will you ask the same financial compensation from Microsoft when the XB1 sales are almost doubled by PS4 than when sales are 50/50 (like Xbox 360 vs. PlayStation 3)? Of course not, you'll ask more then.

How are the deals made do you know? And it's the publishers that make the deals not devs.

Of course I don't know, but its obvious that it involves some sort of financial compensation for the publisher.

Yeah but the company is getting paid to only advertise for X1 AND is still making more money off of the PS4. Its a win-win situation for them.

In most cases it doesn't really matter. MS get to spend some money, publisher sells more games on x1 platform. And to top it all off they then sell even more on the PS4.

The problem is with games like COD. Giving the dlc much later to PS than Xbox hurts them. A lot of PS people just stop caring and stop getting the dlc.

You have a point that they might lose more potential sales from the ps4 than they gain from the x1 but i'm pretty sure the MS money covers that.

The thing you should be saying is, that 3rd party advertising is gonna get way more expensive for MS now. They have way less pulling power.

But if advertising on the PS4 means you are likely to sell far more copies, then that makes more sense. Yes, the money from MS helps ballance that out but at some point, and I think sooner rather than later, the same publishers will want to build an install base for future iterations of their franchise, not take money up front. One compensates, one invests.

Why would you be likely to sell "far more copies" on PS4? It's not as if someone with a PS4 won't be interested in buying the game for PS4 just because they saw an Xbox One ad. Madden had Xbox One ads yet still sold on PS4. Same with FIFA. Same with CoD. Same with Ass Creed. Would those games have sold "far more" on PS4 than they did if the advertisements were for the PS4? No.

It's a win/win for the publishers of the games no matter if they take money from Microsoft or Sony. Their games are going to sell the same regardless, and it's free advertising.

I thought this thread was gonna be about it not making sense for MS. For the developer it's easy money. They don't have to spend any money on ads (And MS probably pays them extra as well.), and it'll still sell great on the PS4 regardless.

Yeah, and they lose potential sales in the process because the advertising is talking to a smaller audience. In the end taking the money could lead to sales slowing right down and eventually making the franchise unprofitable. The gaps going to grow from what it is now to 10m - 12m  - 15m - 20m until it becomes suicide to advertise to the much smaller userbase and lose ever more potential customers. It's the quickest way to kill your franchise in my opinion.

Regardless if it's advertised for the XBO or the PS4 the people on the other platform will buy it anyway. It's not like AC U or DA:I sold 0 copies on PS4...

Without throwing money around MS is doomed, they got nothing else to compete with other then halo and that is not enough. The days of MS brain washing the public third parties were excusive is over. Hope MS is done after this gen, get a better compnay n board.

It makes sense to MS, so I guess they over rule what you think.

The problem with this logic is that it is using the World Wide install base(even though it's still wrong).  Most of the advertising deals seem to be region specific.

So, in the US, the gap is much smaller and is likely to be the same or similar to what it is now.  If that is the case, the advertising $$$ is going to a location relevent for the system.

Not in every situation, but in a lot of the advertising deals.

It is near the end of the end....

It makes sense because Microsoft is willing to pay for it. I'm not sure what else there is to say, or what's hard to understand about it.

you make some good points but look at a game that should be completely neutral and have no previous bias to any one platform. The game that comes to mind is watch dogs. PS4 advertising and that has outsold the X1 version by a whopping 3-1. 3 million sales to 1 million.

If WD had of gone with X1 for the marketing it would have sold a little more on the X1 but I'm pretty sure it would have a good bit less on the PS4.

The question to publishers is, does the MS money make up for the potential lost sales. The ideal situation for the publisher is Sony paying for the marketing.
