In the end taking the money could lead to sales slowing right down and eventually making the franchise unprofitable. The gaps going to grow from what it is now to 10m - 12m - 15m - 20m until it becomes suicide to advertise to the much smaller userbase and lose ever more potential customers. The problem with this logic is that it is using the World Wide install base(even though it's still wrong). Most of the advertising deals seem to be region specific.
So, in the US, the gap is much smaller and is likely to be the same or similar to what it is now. If that is the case, the advertising $$$ is going to a location relevent for the system.
Not in every situation, but in a lot of the advertising deals.
