Nintendo's reluctance to build new IP's is killing their brand

You have to first prove that they are reluctant to do so.

Secondly, you killed your statement my stating they have made and launched new IP's.

Third, Nintendo has a couple brands, including their own company name, which brand are they killing?

Fourth, you have to provide proof that new IPs is what is needed to revive their brand because old IP's are killing their brand.

After two years on the market, Nintendo have only created two new IP's for the system.

Reluctant means they aren't very willing. Not that they haven't.

They're killing their company. No successful new IP is leading to fewer people buying their consoles and traditational franchises. Mario, DK, Pikmin, Zelda etc. are unable to sell enough consoles by themselves.

The proof is in the success of the new IP in driving Wii sales. More than half of the best selling games on Wii were new IP for that generation. The best selling game on PS4 and XBox1 is a new IP for this generation.

After two years on the market, Nintendo have only created two new IP's for the system.

Actually, you dont know how many new IPs Nintendo has created for the system.

And you know do know more than two.  But they haven't launched yet.

Reluctant means they aren't very willing. Not that they haven't.

Yes, exactly. Now prove that Nintendo is not willing to make new IPs.

And, consider the fact they just announced a "garage" team not to long ago.

No successful new IP is leading to fewer people buying their consoles and traditational franchises.

That has nothing to do with if Nintendo wants or do not wants to make a new IP.

What your title should say is:  Nintendo's New WiiU IPs are not doing for it, what Nintendo's new Wii's IP's did for that system.

The best selling game on PS4 and XBox1 is a new IP for this generation.

Are you talking about an exclusive title for each system, or a cross gen port supplied by a third party?

If its a cross gen port from a third party, why would you compare that to an exclusive first party title?

If its WatchDogs, the WiiU is getting it.  If its Destiny, there is nothing from the WiiU from getting it except

the third party that made it, which Nintendo can't do anything about.

You get more new I.P. from Nintendo without realizing than you probably do from the other two console makers. Just think about it. Most of the industry is sequel-driven, because that's what gamers demand. New IPs have never been more risky than they are today. The fact that there are *any* at all anymore is actually quite amazing to me.

That is just plain wrong. You listed 8 new IP's from Nintendo. Lets make a list of new IP's from Sony since 2006:

Loco Roco

MotorStorm

LittleBigPlanet

Uncharted

Resistance

The Last Of Us

Beyond: Two Souls

Driveclub

Demon's Souls

The Order: 1886

Resistance

Bloodborne

Journey

Patapon

Knack

Until Dawn

Tearaway

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

MAG

Warhawk

Heavenly Sword

That is 21 new IP's from Sony in the same time frame in which Nintendo only made 8 new IP's. I'm sure MS have made many as well.

Again... The market was full of casuals which aren't loyal... Motion controls was a new thing and it was marketed really aggressively towards casuals when it came to the wii so of course casual games will sell well (and not to mention a few of those games came free with the wii like wii sports) just like every other casual stuff... Sure, they were "new IPs" but most of those new IP's werent even good...

And of course the 3ds won't do as good as the DS considering its increasing competition against smartphones... When the DS came out, Phones couldn't play games nor did they have a proper market place like the App store or Google Play and you would be lucky to even get wifi on them so again a lot of casuals bought the DS...

And you can't buy a wiiU for $200 easily... You have to know where to look in order to buy it for $200 and not to mention, its mostly used... If I was a casual and I walk into a retail store like Walmart, I wont be able to buy a wiiU for $200

I think you are not understanding/underestimating how much influence the Casual's had with the wii/DS and now that they are gone, what you are basically left with are mostly people that want the games like Mario and etc as well as IPs that are actually good (new or old)... Both the 3ds and wiiU has a few new IPs coming out and they have new IPs that are already out but the ones that are out are selling poorly cause they are too niche and not very well known!

The "casual" argument is such a weak one. People bought the Wii and the DS because there was interesting software that people were interested in playing. Whether they were normal people who had normal lives or people who spend their whole lives on internet forums doesn't really matter. One groups money is not more desirable than the others. By refusing to cater to people who are interested in new experiences (the people that forum-goers call casuals), Nintendo are missing out on a massive market. I don't see what loyalty has to do with anything. Consumers will always be loyal to the best product to suit their needs and wants. The market clearly want new experiences from Nintendo. Rehashing existing IP's not so much.

Bolded: This is exactly the point I am making. This is a stupid strategy. It's the strategy of a company that have thrown in the towel. If this is their policy moving forward, Nintendo doesn't have a future.

I can't disagree more. Jizz has nailed it on the head with every post. People didn't buy the Wii because of interesting software. They bought it because it was a fad. The casual argument is not weak. It's straight up true. The Wii was just a perfect storm of great marketing, lucky timing, and appeal to everyone. I'm a diehard Nintendo fan, but I'll be the first to say that the Wii was a fluke. I think what you're trying to say is that if Nintendo tried to reappeal to the casual market then they would become very successful. And I think you're wrong. Nothing like the Wii will ever happen again. The people that bought the Wii now have other forms of casual entertainment. It almost sounds like you want Nintendo to make another Wii...I'd much prefer them to just continue making the great games that they are.

People didn't buy the Wii because of interesting software... but I'll be the first to say that the Wii was a fluke.

Im sorry, but this makes no sense whatsoever.

First thing you have to consider.  Wii was popular all over the world.

Its appeal was cross cultural, crossed age groups, and other identity groups.

Now, I doubt those millions of people simply passed by a white box and said, that looks great, im going buy it as decoration for my house.

No, they bought the Wii because they wanted to play WiiSports, and only the console allowed for what WiiSports was offering.

Just like many people bought the balanceboard to play WiiFit.

Software always sells hardware... but Hardware can refresh, reinvent and innovate software.

But if there is no software... or not enough good software to make use of the hardware, the hardware itself as a game console is worthless.

Therefore, there is no intrinsic value to buy a console itself except for the games it can play.

At this moment, people who can afford to buy consoles, are not buying the WiiU because it is well known

it will not get certain very popular games from some of the biggest game publishers in the world.

How do people know this?  Because those third parties have said so.

It has nothing to do with the console itself.

You want to play Madden?  Dont get a WiiU

You want to play Destiny?  Dont get a WiiU

You want to play CoD?  Dont get a WiiU.

etc.

You want to play Bayonetta 2? Get a WiiU !

Is Bayonetta as an IP as big as a CoD or a Madden?  No.

Nintendo has a lot more than 8. Have to add some more..

Zengeki non reginleiv

Disaster day of crisis

Xenoblade

Endless Ocean

Another Code

Excite Trucks

... and many more from gc era too

But I have to agree with  you. That Nintendo has create some new IPs is a fact. But Sony has done a better work not only creatin many new IPs too but making them big and creatin hype around them. Last PS3's year was terrific in that way

PD: you put Resistance twice

Sony still has created many more new IPs since 2006 than Nintendo. And they have created a lot more in the PS2 era as well, more than Nintendo created in the same time frame. Not only the marketing, but the marketing, appeal and VOLUME of the new IP's they created generally exceeded that of what Nintendo created.

It not reluctance its lack of competence and willingness to take a risk. Rehashing the same things over and over is easier and safe, Mario will sale 3/4m a new ip might well do The wonderful numbers.

Is Bayonetta as an IP as big as a CoD or a Madden?  No.

I completely understand what you're saying. However, it's only proving my point. The Wii was popular with everyone. And do you know what something is called if it is popular with everyone (a lot of people) for a short period of time? A fad. The Wii was a fad. You cannot argue this. You cannot.

"they bought the Wii because they wanted to play WiiSports"

Sort of. They bought the Wii because they wanted to play WiiSports...with motion controls. The only reason people wanted to play WiiSports is because it had motion controls. I completely agree that software USUALLY sells hardware. But in the Wii's case, a lot of the hardware was sold because of the appeal of the hardware, not the actual game the hardware was used for. And your argument is going to be "but you can't use the hardware if you don't have any software, now can you ya big hairy ape fucker?" And my response to that is that is an extremely limited and immature way of looking at it (and please don't ever call me an ape fucker ever again. So childish). Obviously you can't use the hardware without the software. However, that doesn't mean that the hardware wasn't the DRIVING FACTOR in you buying the console. How you should look at it is: what was the biggest factor that made you buy a Wii? Was it the 5 sport minigame collection that came bundled with the system or was it the fact that you got to use motion controls to play that game? I think all the casuals (who are the majority of people who bought the Wii) would say the latter. They didn't buy it for WiiSports. They bought it for motion controls. And motion controls were THE fad of last generation. Why do you think Sony and Microsoft tried their own variation of motion controls? Because they wanted to capitalize on that market before it disappeared.

I love Nintendo. I loved the Wii. And I will buy fucking everything that Nintendo pushes out until the day that Nintendo dies (I'm immortal, so I can't die before them). But let's not get carried away. The Wii was a fluke and nothing of that magnitude will ever happen again. They got lucky, let's move on.

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.

How well has Sony supported all their new IPs?

Have they been consistent in quality?

In sales?

Point is, more is not always better.  Ubisoft dumped alot of software on the Wii, but that software was mostly

crap.  It didnt do anything good for the console.  And possibly even ruined its image.

Most of the new IP's Sony created have been of very good quality. Many of them didn't sell well, but many did sell well, and while some have not been consistent in sales, some others have been, and some have even increased in sales with their newer installments.

The point is that Sony tried a lot, and it has paid off. Nintendo also needs to try many times, and they will find success.

I agree with you before but not now. Sony has done an excellent work to have new and great IPs. no doubt about that. ButNintendo has create more IPs than any company. And I mean Nintendo as first party. Sony has gained many ip's but not all from their own creation. It doesn't matter to appreciate the quality of a game for sure, but if we talk abou that we must talk with property
