Probably not. I think Nintendo will buy more developers and will hopefully fix it for their next console

well like Nintendo has hinted at a few times now, im expecting them to fully unify their handheld and home consoles next gen to the point that both peices of hardware are nearly identical and will play all the same games as one another.

With the increase of developement time/costs for HD games (im also assuming it takes quite a bit more time/money to develop for 3DS compared to previous handhelds) Nintendo can no longer give strong support to two completely different peices of hardware and this would get even worse next gen as time/costs continue to increase.

The best solution is to unify these devices and essentially focus all their attention on one platform. Also this ensures that Nintendo's next console has all the hardcore Japanese 3rd party support and child-friendly western support that Nintendo handhelds are use to getting.

Well... The whole unification into one console is a bad concept/idea imo cause if its fails, they are royally fucked. Like for example, right now, the wiiU is selling terribly but the 3ds is selling very nicely so it evens out the losses. (Obviously not like even even but you get what I mean) Vs, if they have one device and it fails, well, for the next 5 years, they will not be making any money at all which is really bad. Sure, you could say, oh, one platform = more games and that is a valid point but it also results in higher risk cause if the platform isn't appealing, then good luck. Specially since that if you make it a portable console, like a tablet, well, it will be very underpowered compared to the ps5/x2 just cause it wont have the power requirement. And if you make it a console, well then u have places like Japan where they seem to hate buying consoles. (Those are just examples btw, there are many other reasons as well)

What they should do instead is do what they have always been doing and just do a console & handheld. The only difference this time around should be that they are the same architecture, just the handheld version will be lower powered that way, all they should really have to do in order to port it is have lower graphics and there shouldnt really be that much recoding involved and this way, they dont have to rely on one SKU to be a success

They could be royally fucked anyway, I think people don't understand that. The console division is nothing but a drag on Nintendo unless they have a miracle gimmick to sell a console with they simply can't sell consoles anymore, not in numbers that warrant having 70%+ of your dev resources tied to it.

What unification really does is it will strengthen their main pillar that is actually doing OK ... the handheld division and basically in effect do away with the console that has been keeping resources/games away from their handheld division for ages.

Now that handhelds are powerful enough they can just put that handheld chip into a box (like VitaTV) and let it also be their home console. But make no mistake, this will be the handheld/portable driving the bus.

But it also means that things like Splatoon, Mario Maker, NSMBU (which is better than NSMB2), MK8 (which is better than MK7) aren't kept away from the majority of the Nintendo fanbase that owns a 3DS and doesn't own a Wii U. In the future these games will be able to sell to the widest range of Nintendo consumer.

Even things like Bayonetta 2 maybe could sell decent if had a 40+ million userbase instead of the pathetic 7 million Wii U owners. The sooner Nintendo can break this divison of their games the better.

I agree with the same architecture bit, I think you will have a Nintendo handheld next gen that could output around 200-300 GFLOPS, and then the "home" variant will just be that same chip with 2-3x the CPU/GPU cores and maybe double triple the RAM. The handheld games will run in 540-720p, the console games will run in 1080p maybe with a few extra effects.

This generation has been a nightmare for Nintendo, probably one beyond their wildest dreams. This is a company that never posted a full year fiscal loss in almost 100 years of operation prior to this generation starting. The sooner they can write this whole five year period off probably the better. I think Nintendo would prefer that the last few years never happened.

It has been a nightmare but it happened, and what's happened has happened. To say it was a wasted generation is wrong, though, because, even if just about everything that could have gone wrong went wrong, they had to finally face the issue. (And I still think this was the best time for them to have all these issues, because I don't think AAA(A) is going to sustain itself for much longer and everyone is racing towards a cliffedge. Burned bridges won't matter when all these companies go the way of THQ with their stupid budgets and sales expectations. At the rate we're going, Sony will be bankrupt and M$ will have sold or disolved the XBox brand.)

As for the HD, to be fair in their favor, they've seemingly picked it up extremely quickly and well after the initial hiccup and hurdle. You've got the Splatoon devs making a full HD game from scratch in less than two years with a small dev crew, you've got a small section of MarioEAD making Captain Toad on what's probably a 5$ budget in under a year. Streamline it more, and Fusion will have a nonstop stream of high quality, HD games from Nintendo and without having to juggle two systems.

I think Fusion will help, but even that I'm not sure is a silver bullet. Fusion will help with more Mario/Zelda/Kirby/DK/Pokemon games being released on a more timely basis yes, but I still think the ugly spectre of iOS/Android looms over Nintendo's head and is taking away 3DS customers from them every day and has completely decimated their Wii audience.

It's like a cancer, Fusion may be like the chemotherapy. Maybe it works ... maybe it doesn't but it is probably their best shot at this point. We'll have to see.

I think part of Nintendo's problem is they are very, very tied to the concept of $39.99 handheld games and $49.99-$59.99 home console games, even though this setup really only benefits Sony/MS today IMO. If they were to look into more non-traditional business models perhaps they could have more success, but I think it's too big of a leap for them to take.

This generation is basically a wasted one for Nintendo, they will just have to regroup and try their best with the Fusion concept.

Not at all.

Garage got off the ground within EAD in a big way. Next Level moved up in the world and are a much needed Western dev (they still need a couple more). They came to learn how HD development will affect their costs, times of development, and resource management. They're building good bridges with indie devs and pushed forward Nintendo Frame Work and almost universal engine support for development.

If they can fix their Nintendo OS and their account systems, they will be in a good position.

They've lost money every year since 2011 (the year the 3DS launched). The 3DS become profitable, right when the Wii U then became an achor on their bottom line.

They're looking at going from 100 million consoles to maybe 18 million this generation. From 150 million handhelds down to probably about half that.

But yeah ... they finally figured out what HD is 10 years after every other developer. Progress. Nintendo's needed a "couple more Western developers" for about 12 years now.

It's funny everybody always claim Nintendo sales are in the toilet ....yes the wii u has not sold as much as the wii but now are profiting on every console sold and the 3ds will sell less than the ds but is far from a failure and is profiting on every console sold ......people seem to always point out Nintendo issues and lack of sales but every home console has been profitable  Sony last generation went  from selling 154 million ps2 to 83 million ps3 ...Sonyportables PSP went from selling 80 million to 8 million Vitas ...Sony playstation brand had loses for years (2006-2011)but no ones talks about that ...I'm not mentioning this to bash Sony but it's a double standard when it comes to Nintendo ...it's sickening Nintendo has only like two of three yearly  losses in 125 years but it's always doom and gloom Nintendo isn't going anywhere anytime soon and it's funny they have the number one portable and number two console and they get all this doom and gloom ..it's crazy smh lol

Well... Having two SKU's lowers the risk of being royally fucked cause the issue of having something thats handheld is that it drastically reduces the performance capability of the console cause you always have to be considerate of the battery life and the price of the handheld cause if you are targetting the handheld space as your main focus, you have to be considerate of the competition like iphones/itouch which most people can get for $200sh (with contract for iphones). But the issue comes in when trying to compete with the ps5/x2 cause due to they not being portable, they aren't as constraint on performance since there isn't a battery/power bottleneck so it will be severly underpowered to those consoles just like how the latest phones are right now compared to ps4/x1.

On top of that, there are also development issues cause x86 is expensive for mobile platforms and sucks power harder then hookers sucking ur d and I think the developers pretty much made it clear that they want x86 and nothing else since its such an easy thing to develop for so I doubt Nintendo wants to go for Arm if they want to be developer friendly but if they go Arm, well, then we have the same issues as the wiiU once again with third party not caring.

I just think there is no real harm on making two SKUs... Sure, the wiiU is not doing very well and the 3ds is doing really great but the wii did fantastic and so did the DS. There are too many risky factors in going into one SKU imo, specially with the large performance difference it will have against the competition from the console front as well as many other factors that I have said

Sure, there will be games that not all fans get to play but oh well, thats how it has been with every generation in every company and its not that much of a bad of a thing

It should be noted that the 3DS refresh is likely going to push profits per console much, much higher than before despite the improved hardware and 3D. The innards of the console are incredibly cheap now, and they'll make a killing off the faceplates.

I can't wait for 2015, I'm going to finally pick up a Wiiu, just waiting for a good few games that I want.

I own PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 2 slim, PlayStation 3 60gb, PlayStation 3 slim 1tb, PSP, PS Vita 32gb and PlayStation 4.

You cant compare a nintendo remake to a PS3 remake, a lot of gamers on PS4 hadnt PS3 so the sales were logical.

While most nintendo gamers had a GC or a Wii, so a remake  wont have the same effect than TLOU ( like we saw with WW HD)

Twilight Princess/Skyward Sword on the WiiU would easily outsell WWHD, and TP would probably outsell TLOUR. WWHD, arbuably, never needed a refresh as it still looks good even on the NGC, but SS and TP really aged poorly, and Twilight Princess is one of the most popular titles of the series because of its exposure on the Wii to the general public before the Wii "fad" ended.

Many people would pick these titles up because they actually gain a lot from an HD facelift unlike TLOUR/WWHD.

I disagree with this. After playing WWHD and going back to the original... I couldn't believe how poor the original looked.  I don't think it has aged as good as most people think it has. WWHD is one of the best looking games I've ever played, I wish TP would get the same treatment!

1doesnotsimply

Wii Sony or Microsoft fix their output? Obviously not.

One company can't do it alone that why 3rd parties are important. That is the difference between Nintendo and the other two.

They need to buy Indie devs to make them Sports games since EA won't make them. They had REALLY good SPORTS games for SNES, N64, and even the GC...

Also they REALLY need to start REMAKING a lot of their games... The Last of Us Remake for PS4 sold over 1 million COPIES and it was a Remake of an ALREADY HD GAME!!! WTF!! You think people won't buy Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Majora's Mask, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Metroid Prime Trilogy, and like even some of their SNES Classics like Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound remastered?? They'd make a TON of money from this... I would even say this can sway the Wii U in a positive direction by A LOT!

You cant compare a nintendo remake to a PS3 remake, a lot of gamers on PS4 hadnt PS3 so the sales were logical.

While most nintendo gamers had a GC or a Wii, so a remake  wont have the same effect than TLOU ( like we saw with WW HD)

The Wind Waker is one, if not THE least favorite Zelda for fans of the series. But yet the Remake still sold over a Million copies world wide. And we are not counting Digital Downloads that came with the console.

If you can make an arguement saying that most people that bought the Last of Us Remastered didn't have PS3, you can say the same for people with Wii  and Wii U's. It's like saying Sony fans aren't loyal to their consoles.

And I know PLENTLY of people who would buy remakes of both those Zelda games... Me Included.

Not sure what makes you think WW is one of the least favorite Zelda, i hear the opposite from most fans who think TP is the worst of the serie. ( and TP didnt sell so much compared to WW , at the opposite when you compare the install base of both consoles 22M vs 100M )

No, you didnt understand it seems, i said a lot of PS4 gamers had no PS3 because they were not  all sony fans, only gamers, 30% were jsut people who had a 360 or a Wii, while Nintendo consoles are bought by nintendo fans and nintendo fans buy all nintendo consoles so it's logical to say the game will sell more because it wont be a new game for most of them.

But TP was a launch title, it didn't have 100 mill users to sell it with. Wind Waker was supposed to move units for the GC but failed.

WW is one of the least popular Zelda's because at the time Nintendo lied to us. They said their next generation Zelda was going to look like this:

But instead we got Wind Waker. It looks like a damn Kiddie game to this day! Lots of Zelda fans felt this was a smack to the face (including me). Even though Wind Waker was and still is a great game, I would say it's still on the bottom in terms of Zelda games. I finished it and I don't really remember it much besides it's fantastic combat system and final battle. Many of my friends that had OOT reserved a copy of WW and never picked it up... It was like 2 people out of 7 ratio in my group. It's still the least selling Zelda game that premiered first on any console (Skyward Sword and Majora's Mask were sequels and weren't the first on the Wii and N64 respectively, so I didn't include them. Plus they came out when both cycles of their consoles were at it's end).

TP was one of the reasons why people bought a Wii initially. Nobody was lining up to buy a GC for WW. Hell nobody is still lining up to buy a Wii U for WW 12 years later. Even though it did boost up sales a bit last year, but people didn't feel like its a "must have" or a"console buyer". Plus, all my friends that bought Ocarina of Time bought a Wii JUST TO PLAY TP!! ALL of them!! That's because it finally looked like that game above!!! They all loved it too! Some are still telling me to play it cause I bought it at release date and never played it!

If you ever see a remake of TP and SS, I guarantee they'll sell more. Then you will see a difference. We would love to be in a world where people don't pay attention to silly things like "this game looks kiddie" and just pay attention to the gameplay, but that's not how things work.
