It has been a nightmare but it happened, and what's happened has happened. To say it was a wasted generation is wrong, though, because, even if just about everything that could have gone wrong went wrong, they had to finally face the issue. (And I still think this was the best time for them to have all these issues, because I don't think AAA(A) is going to sustain itself for much longer and everyone is racing towards a cliffedge. Burned bridges won't matter when all these companies go the way of THQ with their stupid budgets and sales expectations. At the rate we're going, Sony will be bankrupt and M$ will have sold or disolved the XBox brand.)
As for the HD, to be fair in their favor, they've seemingly picked it up extremely quickly and well after the initial hiccup and hurdle. You've got the Splatoon devs making a full HD game from scratch in less than two years with a small dev crew, you've got a small section of MarioEAD making Captain Toad on what's probably a 5$ budget in under a year. Streamline it more, and Fusion will have a nonstop stream of high quality, HD games from Nintendo and without having to juggle two systems.
