Forums - Gaming - Flashback: MS Offered $25 Billion To Buy Nintendo In 1999

Just Microsoft trying to Monopolize gaming (as usual).

Competition is good for quality product. More competition you have, more developers trying to makes great games, more quality products you have to choose from. Consumers win!

If you really want a live example of this, Wrestling fans know the best quality of product came from back in the 90's when there was 3 Major wrestling organizations (WWF, WCW, ECW) now you got really one and their product is really lacking from the past.

BTW If this would have happened I don't think we would have had a Halo franchise. Instead Microsoft would have probably revamped Metroid to be like Halo, probbly would have killed Samus off... And made the new guy in her suit some jacked up muscle bound Arnold Schwarzenegger like freak. Just Saying.

Actually Sony's Move was the gimmick as it is a direct copy of wiimote. Kinect was an entirely new innovation to bring completely hands free motion controls. Re hd on Xbox one vs ps4 for hd comparison, we are talking nearly the same architecture albeit slightly faster ram on ps4.The difference graphics wise is getting increasingly smaller and will continue to do so. Most informed gamers hardly talk about this fact anymore. PC is a different story as you mention. PC is true hd.

Sony made the Eyetoy a gen  before the Kinect even came out. This year it would be exactly a decade since its release. MS doesnt create these things. The only reason they got the Kinect was to be able to have something to battle Sony and Nintendo with.

You mean we could have played Nintendo franchises on a true-HD device with standard third-party support and without the gimmicks? Dear lord, please turn back time.

1. The gamecube > Xbox

2. The Wii sold quite a bit more than the 360 ( = more successful).

3. 720 p 'hd' (which is what most of 360 games were and not even most of original xbox games if memory serves me correctly) would not have done much for Nintendo's more cartoonish style in video games. Obvioulsy, 1080p makes a difference but the early on "high definition" games didn't really look that much better than the standard definition games from the generation before.

4. Those "gimmicks" are what sold, what still sells, and what will continue to sell Nintendo devices. All those succesful generations of Nintendo devices? Yea... Nintendo introduced NEW things and NEW playstyles in each of them. The original xbox did horrible in sales and while the 360 did much better it still came no where close to Wii level. The Wii U I doubt will ever have a point where the one passes it (especially if xbox is spun off).

5. Don't blame Nintendo for third party developers being too lazy to optimize games for their consoles because it "takes too long to program for their controllers." Lazy developers = apathetically passive buyers. It's their own fault.

6. Much love!

I agree and disgree with somethings here. Nintendos history with third party is mostly their own fault. They are a very controlling company and outsiders visions dont really mesh well with them. Third parties have always had issues with them because of it and the Playstation exists because of the disagreeable nature of Nintendo.

Thank God they declined!

Nintendo would have been in a better position, just like how Nintendo would be in a better position if they agreed to partner up with Sony back then.

like Rare?

*rolls eyes*

You'd think you would get sick of that shtick of yours, but whatever.

While they may have gotten the games right, console wise, they're still stuck in the past.

Everything Microsoft has ever internally created has been overshadowed by everything they've purchased. Dont get mad, just prove me wrong (If I even am wrong). Its not a schtick, im just pointing out whats real.

I never questioned your validity of what you said, merely the repetitiveness of your statement. You talk MS's lack of first party ad nauseam whenever MS first party is discussed.

And no, definitely not mad :)

Nintendo tries to force 3rd party games to make UNIQUE experiences with their UNIQUE controllers and they are viewed as the bad guy when those 3rd party companies either refuse to do it and, thereby, make games only for other devices where they use (for the most part) the same controller scheme that has been used for the past 15  years or when those third party companies only do horrible port versions of their games (AC3 wow just WOW!)? How ridiculous is that.

I agree with the playstation thing because a lot of developers do disagree with Nintendo's way of things, however I think it's their fault and not Nintendo's.

The point is, Nintendo HAS to be controlling because they are the ONLY ones pushing innovation. Yea sure the other companies do things eventually (typically after Nintendo does) but even when they do they often don't even hardly at all focus on it. Gaming will only advance when innovation is the focus, and most sequel games on ps3 - > ps4 or 360 - > one are just the same gameplay with enhanced graphics... yippie. There are, of course, exceptions to this:

Arkham Series

Assassins Creed 4 I am LOVING right now. It makes 3 and 1 look like a horrible joke in terms of gameplay enjoyment.

yes, because we all know what happened with Rare

Rare was already falling apart when Xbox bought them. Main people left. Even without that to consider viva pinata Nad kameo were 2 great games if you bothered to play them which you didn't. Also after the failure of their other games if you were rare wouldn't you want to continue working on games that sold well. Kinect sports rivals was they're high set selling game

Ltd predictions by the time 9th Gen comes out

Ps4:110million

Xbox one :75 million( was 65)

Wii u: 20 milliion

Eh.. I think it's a good thing that Nintendo declined!

What would be of Nintendo if they did accept this?

Did MS ever wanted to buy Sony? lol.

Microsoft joined the gaming industry because they wanted to partner with Sony and Sony turned them down so they vowed to destroy them. This is primarily because of Sony delving into the home multimedia region of things and bringing videogames with them into that new era. Anyone who creates a multimedia hub type of device is a threat to Microsoft.

Dramatic much?
