Forums - Gaming - Why is moneyhatting frowned upon?

I remember that sig Walsufnir had about Company A vs. Company B
Kind of reminds me of that scenerio. One does it and it's looked down upon, another does it and it's good for business. Double standards all around.

I'm always reminded of that sig in times like these.

It is bad because in most cases the console in question would have gotten the game anyway, but it must share it with another console or two. Essentially the console-maker isn't paying to get the game to their console, but paying to keep it away from another.

How is that bad? It's business. That's how Microsoft got Halo, Sony got Final Fantasy, Nintendo got Bayonetta, etc.

Companies aren't friends that look out for each other. They are trying to outcompete one another by cutting into the other's profits.

If Sony cared about TR on the PS4, they could have negotiated a similar deal with SE. They didn't. End of story. This isn't fantasy land where everyone is on equal footing and can't get ahead of anyone else. Microsoft did what they had to, and SE took the deal for an instant profit.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

Comparing apples to oranges always leads to great things. I love that every xb fan that has posted on this thread makes it sound like Sony fans are reacting that way because of Evil MS, when it's far from the case. So, yeah your "this" and "/thread" comments don't make any sense in this case.

Take Ninty for example:

Case A: The game won't be made if it's not funded by a company. Ninty helps them and gets an exclusive. (Bayo 2)
-> Props to Ninty

Case B: A huge franchise that sold well on a particular console is not released on the console that made it popular because of moneyhatting. (MH 4)
->Bad Ninty
(that is assuming that Capcom didn't make such a decison without having a deal with Ninty).

You don't have to be a sony fan to dislike this kind of practise and to understand the difference between the two.

Didn't many people react badly to Bayonetta 2 being a wiiu exclusive? Sure they did. But they were wrong. People who were fan of Tomb Raider for almost 20 years, on ther hand, have every right to be upset with both SE and MS. Not everyone can afford a second console for a single game. This is downright disrespectful from SE and a terrible practise from MS. Use that money to make your own studios or even fund indie developers like Ninty and Konami did with Platinum games.

It would be similar to Sony moneyhatting Ubisoft to not release Just Dance 2015 on wii or wiiu cause that would mean that people who love the franchise and have no interest in buying a ps4 would be unable to play the franchise whose success was part of a particular console. Sure just Dance 3 came to ps3/xb360 too, but it was thanks to wii that it became such a successful product.

Edit: Sunset overdrive is a perfect example of good practise from MS. They wanted a game and hired people who could make it.

Here's an idea, why don't they make their own games? Make one that people will want to buy an Xbone for. Halo was a game like that once. Are they too afraid to do another?

Microsoft already makes their own games. The Wii U is a prime example that first party exclusives won't net you sales, hence moneyhatting.

Okay, what games? What new games, not Halo, Gears or some Dance thing for Kinect, are they making themselves? One that would be that game to move consoles from their own studios. Okay so Halo and Gears will but surely they need more than old franchises?

Wii U isn't selling because of lack of game support from 3rd parties, it is it's own games that are makign it sell.

They opened a dozen new studios over the years. They're working on something. Microsoft also has new stuff like Scalebound, Sunset Overdrive, and Project Spark. There isn't a shortage of new projects at Microsoft Studios.

The Wii U's first party games aren't enough to power it past the PS4. Microsoft knows you need more than first party games to sell, and this is why they moneyhat.

Everyone doesn't have a problem with moneyhatting if its their preferred console. Sony fans like it the least though because Sony doesn't do it as often as the others.

I complain about moneyhatting as well, but it's really nothing more than paying a developer to make a game for you.  It's the same as if you paid your own first party studio to make the game, although with an additional fee to secure it as exclusive.  Nowdays, if there was no moneyhatting, then there would be even less of a reason to get more than one console.  Nearly every game on the 360 was on the PS3, both consoles would be that much more similar without third party exclusives.

Because it sucks to be at the bad end of the stick. There is no difference between moneyhatting a game (TR for X1, GTA for PS2) or paying a studio to make games for your console (Epic on 360, Insomniac on PS3). This is how the industry functions and noone is really innocent in this.

Working on something. Nice to know. Shame we don't know what. Scalebound and Sunset Overdrive are not being made by their studios. They are a deal where MS fund development and it appears on MS console, very simple business and not a concern.It's this obvious taking away a game from others that is.

Maybe Wii U first party aren't enough to take it past the PS4 but its enough to have it keep on toe with Xbox One even without this 3rd party support. I want to see MS make big games themselves, not have 3rd parties do it for them. Forza is a great start but so far Xbone's biggest games are all 3rd party. Xbox gamers deserve more than just paying off 3rd parties for exclusives that already existed anyway.

Hmm, pie.

This explains my view perfectly.

Please post 1 Franchise that was on xbox for a decade and started on Xbox sony paid for..I am waiting...Not this is NOT the same as time DLC, Soyn also comes out and SAYS it's timed, MS tries to hide behind pr speak, it is clear this s timed too. Anyway too bad for square they just hurt the franchise now.

Because someone is paying money for making other people have less fun.

It's the same reason why paying assassins to kill someone is frowned upon.
