Forums - Gaming - Why is moneyhatting frowned upon?

MS cannot compete with sony and are way behind on first party and games, so this is what they do, it's pathetic.

Comparing apples to oranges always leads to great things. I love that every xb fan that has posted on this thread makes it sound like Sony fans are reacting that way because of Evil MS, when it's far from the case. So, yeah your "this" and "/thread" comments don't make any sense in this case.

Take Ninty for example:

Case A: The game won't be made if it's not funded by a company. Ninty helps them and gets an exclusive. (Bayo 2)
-> Props to Ninty

Case B: A huge franchise that sold well on a particular console is not released on the console that made it popular because of moneyhatting. (MH 4)
->Bad Ninty
(that is assuming that Capcom didn't make such a decison without having a deal with Ninty).

You don't have to be a sony fan to dislike this kind of practise and to understand the difference between the two.

Didn't many people react badly to Bayonetta 2 being a wiiu exclusive? Sure they did. But they were wrong. People who were fan of Tomb Raider for almost 20 years, on ther hand, have every right to be upset with both SE and MS. Not everyone can afford a second console for a single game. This is downright disrespectful from SE and a terrible practise from MS. Use that money to make your own studios or even fund indie developers like Ninty and Konami did with Platinum games.

It would be similar to Sony moneyhatting Ubisoft to not release Just Dance 2015 on wii or wiiu cause that would mean that people who love the franchise and have no interest in buying a ps4 would be unable to play the franchise whose success was part of a particular console. Sure just Dance 3 came to ps3/xb360 too, but it was thanks to wii that it became such a successful product.

Edit: Sunset overdrive is a perfect example of good practise from MS. They wanted a game and hired people who could make it.

This explains my view perfectly.

After reading naruball's post, I am starting to understand both of your arguements reguarding the ethics behind it. For a franchise like Tomb Raider, Microsoft is acting a bit selfishly here.

Microsoft will probably continue the moneyhats because of competition, and no other reason. Does anyone expect them to "play fair"? Like VancelX said, they did what they had to, and people who don't want to buy an XB1 will have to pay the price. Profits come before everything in this industry. The only thing MS can do now is hope to not alienate fans even more than this.

because money hatting is literally paying a company money to make sure other people, who would have got to play it, now wont get to.

vs

Using your money from scratch to build a studio and create a game. this doesnt take anything away from the other side. The game would have never went else where.

edit:  and by the way,  healthy competition would be companies creating products and selling them on their own merrits.  Paying other companies in an effort to handi cap the other side, isnt healthy.

What make you think they took something away?  How do you know the Square Enix wasn't going to announce that the game was cancelled?  How do we know that M$ didn't just save the game?

Maybe because M$ paid for this title, 2 or 3 others are now funded that wouldn't have been.

You are only looking at the obvious result and stating that it is the only result.  Nobody here or probably on any gaming website will know all of the facts that went into any Moneyhat situation.

and you use a hell of alot of maybes in an effort to make it not look so bad lol  its kinda funny

How do you know its not secretly made by an alien race that forced it to be MS exclusive

edit:  thought i should add that TR is just a timed exclusive.  If a company paid another to save a game, they would demand full exclusive,  since they are paying for it.

Not that I said that any of those are true.  I hoped you could manage to get the concept of "we don't know the facts".  Sorry for presuming such a thing.

Even if it is a timed exclusive, the same concepts still apply.  M$ probably paid off a majority of the risk involved in this project either way.  That allows other games to get a green light regardless.

It is near the end of the end....

I totally get that MS is a company and they need to do whatever it takes to make their product successful. Nice to see them try everything unlike Sony who let the vita die a terrible death. If I were an investor in MS, I'd probably applaud their efforts. But as a gamer, I still don't like their practises. Neither do I like Sony's timed exclusives. My main point is that people keep calling other hypocrites when it's not always the case.

Also, even if it was a good move from MS, there is an ethical aspect to it. What they're doing is against my morals.Like the rich kid who tries to win by using his parents' money instead of his own talent. Sure, at the end of the day we all want to be winners. But I'd rather support a loser and not enjoy something that I like than someone who uses means that I consider immoral.

Edit: That's part of the reason I never buy apple products. Sure they are a business and they are competing with Samsung, but the billion case they won against Samsung was absolutely ridiculous to me.

1. Why do people act ignorant to the facts when it is clear why people are upset? No one else does this but MS.

2. They did not do it for business or to make their console more attractive. They did it because they want to hurt Sony and because of their ego as usual. They paid to keep Tales of Vesperia from coming to the PS3 in the West as Namco stated. The game sells better on PS anyway, so they will not benefit from the game just like they failed to benefit from TF.

3. The game was already announced for the PS and PC as well and paying to take it away from people who have played it on another platform for years hurts gamers. People who bought the reboot have every right to be upset if they did not play the game on Xbox. I will never buy an Xbox so that argument about MS trying to get PS fans or improve their console is dead.

4. Money hatting kills competition as they are not actually competing and just using it for PR so people like you can praise them, even though it is bad for you too. You mention exclusive DLC, but than say people should not complain about a timed exclusive game that they have supported on PS for years ...really? MS started the DLC thing anyway.

5. I hate the timed exclusive thing period, even from Sony. They were forced to do it, because of MS and people complaining about them not throwing money at third parties. RotTR will come out for PS4 anyway so why waste money on a game that historically sells poorly on your console?

6. If Sony did this for something like Splinter Cell, I would say the same. Especially since I would rather they spend that money on another first party exclusive, which MS never does.

7. MS is trying to buy success, which is why the XboxOne is not an appealing console to begin with. They have nothing exciting to anyone not a big Xbox fan even with the TR announcement. This is why I never owned an Xbox as I can get the same games or games with the same experience on PS. U4 will be better than RotTR and Uncharted is already a bigger franchise so again it is a pointless move by MS.

8. Everything they pay for always goes multiplat one way or another and all you Xbox fans are left with is Gears, Halo, Forza and Fable every generation. That money should have been spent on reviving Conker or Kameo Nights which I actually would find attractive.

9. Lastly, they should be buying franchises like they did Gears, which is actually smart business.

I don't think it should be frowned upon. But the PR bullshit to that goes behind trying to convince gamers that its anything but money hatting is outrageous and should be frowned upon.

CD has said nothing about the game heading towards cancellation, unlike with B2. So while not absolute fact it is highly unlikely that MS money was necessary to ensure the game gets made. If MS saved the franchise that would have been the first thing out of the mouths of those who announced the exclusive deal.

Yep agree with this. That letter that CD sent to the community was really bad.

I approve of Monehatting if they are funding new games that wouldn't have been developed like Sunset Overdrive or Bloodborne. I am against Monehatting games that would have been made anyway for all devices. The later hurts gamers.

When you buy a console to play third party games on it, and a third party game gets moneyhatted into exclusivity on another console, you've every right to be pissed, though you should be more pissed with the third-party company than the moneyhatting first party. That said, when you buy a console because you believe multi-plats are better on that console, and the same company keeps moneyhatting things away from you and you don't want to buy their console because you believe it to be an inferior game for multiplats, it's understandable that you get angry with the moneyhatting company. Last gen, Microsoft did a lot of moneyhatting, but maybe it's just me, but I saw VERY little complaints about it then. Why? Probably because then, 360 was already the preferred console for multi-plats, so the moneyhatting was just overkill. This gen, Microsoft's console is no longer the preferred console for multi-plats, so their moneyhatting is getting really irritating.

I say all this as a guy who owns neither console, only the Wii U, and doesn't really play 3rd party games most of the time anyway, so feel free to take my opinion with a grain of salt, but that's my understanding of where PS4 gamers are coming from. It's not a matter of being Sony fans, it's just the more popular console right now, and they want 3rd party games, but they want them on the system they think is better for them. Last gen, if Sony had moneyhatted a lot of things, they'd have been similarly criticized like Microsoft is being now, because their console was less popular. As far as I'm concerned, the 3rd-party that accepts a moneyhatting deal is always the one more deserving of hate.
