Forums - Gaming - Why is moneyhatting frowned upon?

I understand why sony fans are upset, but you have to give microsoft some credit for securing a massive exclusive (timed or not). They are not doing whats best for their consoles

Why on earth is moneyhatting frowned upon? Google "moneyhatting dirty" and you will see what I mean, so what's wrong with it? Is it a BAD thing to secure games for your console, and get sales? Now we all know about Microsoft's parity clause. THAT is truly dirty (and probably the reason Sony doesn't moneyhat often). I understand it can be an annoyance, but all the hate surrounding it isn't necessary.

If your favorite console was the victim of an opponent's moneyhatting, suck it up. It's called healthy competiton.

Likely due to the fact that there is little quality control when this happens as all the money exchanges hands long before release and even before development. When that happens it can cause issues with trust in the gaming community and cause a loss of sales all around the board. The developer studio or publisher get their money no matter how it sells. Often it's the publisher and not the developer as the contract between the publisher and developers are separate.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Moneyhatting is oftentimes not as much about getting games on your console so much as it is cock-blocking your rivals from getting those games. See: Microsoft's Japan strategy in the early days of the 360/PS3.

Because some people cling to the misguided belief that you can buy just one console and have all the best games of the generation.

its only frowned upon if its Microsoft that did the moneyhatting

Sometimes it does feel this way. Microsoft made a power move to differentiate their console, its not sony only gamers god given right to have every game just because their console is selling the most.

Well, funding a new IP like Titanfall is fair game.

If MS is paying to block an IP from a console on which that IP sells best, and is likely to sell 3 times more on PS4 than XB1 let alone PC sales, it's a betrayal to fans.  If I was working at CD I'd probably be searching for another company to work right now.

Betrayal to fans? Microsoft is looking out for their own fans, and this deal made it possible for them to give their fans a game completely omptomized for the Xbox One.

Microsoft is company, as is CD/SE. They aren't here to make sure every single gamer is happy. They are here to make money, and that's what Microsoft is giving them.

Sony did the exact same thing with Final Fantasy when they stole it from Nintendo, and Nintendo did the exact same thing with Bayonetta 2. Like I said before, the industry isn't a fantasy land where the companies all work together to make everyone happy. No. They look out for themselves and their fans, and getting exclusive rights to games is one of the ways of doing so.

If someone at CD heard this news, they would probably just be happy that Microsoft is paying for their salaries. They don't care if some people who only have a PS4 feel betrayed for whatever reason.

I doubt most industry professionals are that petty.

Except that Nintendo is the only reason that Bayo 2 exists at all. No other publisher or console maker was chomping at the bit for that one. Rise of the Tomb Raider was going to exist either way.

That's more a PR spin than anything. Bayonetta was more than popular enough for someone to publish the second game.

Nintendo just paid more.
