Forums - Nintendo - Why Does Nintendo Fail at Creating a Brand?

That's one way of looking at it. You could also call it having a big enough sack to try new things and approach their customers in a different way.

They don't.

Nintendo created the Wii brand, and it is still in use. It is important to remember that Iwata succeeded Yamauchi, and when he came in post the Wii and DS lines started.

Also, Nintendo may have wanted to name the Gamecube as part of the Nintendo difference, to give a unique name to the console, instead of continuing on the previous entries which focused on raw power. (NES, SUPER NES, N 64)

Lastly, Wii U is not less interesting than Wii 2. The U is actually a 2 in roman numerals. There's nothing wrong with Wii U.

O_O no...no it's not

Why Can't Nintendo Create a Steady Brand?

By brand, I don't mean Mario, Pokemon, or another game series. What I mean is, hardware. While Sony has "Playstation" & Microsoft has "XBox" Nintendo has...?

Nintendo has gone with many different names and seems to kill a name off instead of attempting to grow it. Why is this?

NES - SNES...N64? ...GameCube?

Wii - Wii U...???

Game Boy - Game Boy Color - Game Boy Advance...DS?

DS - DSi - 3DS - 2DS...?

Why did they even leave the NES brand? I'm assuming this was because where do you go after "Super"? Calling the SNES "NES 2" would've aloud the name to continue. Instead, they went somewhere else. N64. Where could they have possibly taken this name even if it was highly successful? I understand why they ditched the GC name, because they were going a different direction and it was unsuccessful (as far as sales) but look at XB 360.

Anyway, then they have "Wii". Finally, another huge console for Nintendo. The follow up should obviously be called "Wii 2" right? Nope, we get "Wii U". Why? Even if it was selling like Hotcakes, what could a potential successor be called? That's what I thought.

The HH's do the same. After calling it "GB Advance" they couldn't really go anywhere even if the DS wasn't made. Again, they found a highly recognized name. What do they do with it? 3DS & 2DS...yeah, that's not confusing and won't destroy any potential of a future HH using the "DS" name.

Now, before you say "Nintendo" being in front is strong enough. Is it really?

They DID achieve this back in the late 80's and early 90's. Back then, you didn't go play a video game system. You played "a Nintendo." Why they went away from that? I have no clue.

Are you seriously annoyed that they don't keep using the same name?

Please add an actual opinion next time. It can even disagree 100% with mine but at least have one.

That's a really good point. Nintendo really needs to work on creating a good brand but they probably won't. They'll just give their next console a new name.

It is stupidity or a failure from a branding standpoint, if they wanted the Nintendo part (which they intentionally left in the name) to stick then they should have never given the thing that name, give it a name that emphasizes the "Nintendo".

Also the Gamecube is exactly what the NES, SNES and N64 were before it, a powerful and very affordable system without any bells and whistles, so I don't see how that broke with any hardware tradition for Nintendo.

It was a more powerful console but its focus was on the new play machanics (luigi's mansion, sunshine, etc.).

It wasn't stupidity, unless Playstation is also stupidity. Playstation is Sony Playstation like Gamecube is Nintendo Gamecube.

@SoundofRain. Games and consoles are not different, there's no reason to differentiate them when it comes to branding, no matter what you put in OP.

That's software, not hardware and even for the software it's an extremely flimsy point, you might as well say that the N64 broke with the tradition because it focused on 3D gameplay.

No, the Playstation is not Sony Playstation like the Gamecube is Nintendo Gamecube, you don't get it. Sony does not call the Playstation "Sony Playstation", they call it just Playstation, that is its official name, that is its brand. Nintendo officially calls the Gamecube the "Nintendo Gamecube",  the "Nintendo" part is the brand name. Don't believe me? Just look at this:

vs.

Do you see this? Nintendo specifically has "Nintendo" in the name of the system. And if you think that they do this for every system then you should go back to the link I provided a couple pages ago, Nintendo doesn't call it "Nintendo Game Boy" nor do they call it "Nintendo Wii", they just call them Game Boy and Wii.

Nintendo is a brand itself.

Sony and Microsoft are not primarily gaming companies, Nintendo is.

                                                                                                               You're Gonna Carry That Weight.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

being in business all these years, clearly they don't have a branding problem. it's debatable that the name "wii-u" is bad, but the brands they've created in their franchises (mario, zelda, pokemon etc) and the name Nintendo itself has resonated with consumers quite well for decades.

WTF? Nintendo is almost an unique brand. I think you drink too much Coke.

3DS, Wii, PSP, Vita, PS2, PS3, PS4 & Steam.

What's the problem? That is my opinion. It disagrees with yours.
