Also, Nintendo may have wanted to name the Gamecube as part of the Nintendo difference, to give a unique name to the console, instead of continuing on the previous entries which focused on raw power. (NES, SUPER NES, N 64)

Lastly, Wii U is not less interesting than Wii 2. The U is actually a 2 in roman numerals. There's nothing wrong with Wii U.
