Nintendo created the Wii brand, and it is still in use. It is important to remember that Iwata succeeded Yamauchi, and when he came in post the Wii and DS lines started.

Also, Nintendo may have wanted to name the Gamecube as part of the Nintendo difference, to give a unique name to the console, instead of continuing on the previous entries which focused on raw power. (NES, SUPER NES, N 64)

Lastly, Wii U is not less interesting than Wii 2. The U is actually a 2 in roman numerals. There's nothing wrong with Wii U.
