Forums - Gaming - Putting the console vs PC debate to rest...... Once and for all.

Completely agreed what you said about all three in the Userbility part. You hit it in the nail. The problem with most of the outspoken fans in this site is that they all assume your average joe is willing to go and try build a PC. And like you said, you can buy one for a decent price but that will still more expensive than consoles. And consoles are all about pricing. So with that in mind, I hope this will be stuck in people's head because this battle about a game not being "exclusive" because it's on PC goes null. If 100 million people buy consoles, I guarantee you that 10 million of them max will have a PC that they can play the same games

That's it, time to go home folks.

Intrinsic just solved the debate that's been going on for 20 years. Let today be remembered as the day that mended the great console/PC schism. Tell your grandchildren when you get old, that you were here, on the VGChartz forum, to witness the end of an era.

And you like most PC types (not saying you are) make it sound simpler than it really is. What you are saying is simply not true.

Lets take a laptop for instance, which as far as PCs go is the locked down PC platform. Have you ever tried instaling a new version of windows OS on a laptop? After doing it, it doesn't just automatically install all the drivers. Even things as simple as your trackpad driver has to be sought out and installed for your specific laptop hardware or not you wil not be able to use multitouch/gestures on the trackpad. If you have a special keyboard layout with special keys, you have to sought out the driver for that too. then sought out the display and cpu drivers to. And this is just talking laptops.

Well, an OS-upgrade on PCs is a lot easier than installing the PS4-OS on a PS3, the XBO-OS on a 360 or the WiiU-OS on the old Wii. ;)

The thing is: if the main purpose of your PC is gaming, you don't need to install the newest Windows version every few years. Are there even PC games released which demand anything newer than the 8 year old Vista? Most 2013 and 2014 PC games will even run on the 13 year old Windows XP... especially those who can still run on a laptop.

So yeah, a complete OS upgrade can be problematic, especially on laptops... but that's not the normal case and the upgrade process got better each new Windows version. The more frequent "normal" updates (Windows security updates, graphic card drivers, Java, Adobe Flash, Steam) run automatically or can be installed with a few mouse clicks.

TLDR, no offense, I could write many paragraphs on the subject myself.

I boil it down to : play what you like, and don't be an arse.

I like both. I'm not an either/or kind of guy. If I had to choose one, which would suck, I would choose PC simply because of the ridiculously huge library/backwards compatibility/other benefits.

I do realize that not everyone has the competence, interest, and budget to play on PC, and that many genres are extraordinarily poorly represented on PC (sports/fighting mostly). It's easier for most people just to choose console. This is even more important should someone have a poor internet connection in a rural or unlucky urban area. Easy to go to Walmart and buy a new game and be playing immediately rather than wait 30 hours for some giant game to download AND THEN start a massive patch lol.

One thing that people don't seem to mention (or if you did, I may have missed it) is that with PC, you can do a lot more things than you can with a console which is one of the reasons why PCs cost so much... With consoles, all you can really do are basic but specified things such as Playing games, Streaming to the vendors that are chosen by Sony and Microsoft and etc. With PC, you can do a lot more like photoshop, video editing, word, excel, and the ability of choice where if you don't like vendor a, you can go with vendor b or c and etc and you get the idea.

Like, I get it, its a gaming site and we are comparing gaming only benefits but if we really want to get into the argument of which one is truely better, we should take into account the wide variety benefits of what PC has to offer cause people buy PCs every 5-7 years anyway... Sure, not everyone uses things photoshop, video converting/editing, streaming to twitch and etc but the benefit of buying a PC is that if you want to do something like that down the line, you can. I mean heck, its so hard to use this site without a PC anyway so its like, if you are going to buy a PC down the road which people will have to eventually cause PCs break or become so outdated that basic applications run like an elephant that why not spend extra money and make it gaming grade

Also, while I do agree that a console is easier to use, the advantage of PC is being able to do PowerUser sorta deal that you can't do in a Console... Like modding virtually every game or removing things like DRM and forcing the 30 fps lock to go to 60 fps etc

Console are evolving and becoming more and more like PC can't deny that. The only thing saving consoles atm is console exclusives. If these games were available on PC. Consoles be in trouble for most part as its easier for core gamers to managed PC games then locked down consoles that require patches and installs to play.

You obviosuly didn't read the OP and then still went on to post. If you did then you would see why what you are saying isn't true.

There is so much wrong with the bolded part that i don't even know where to begin. I will put it this way though, PCs have more to fear from consoles becoming more like them than they other way round and in truth the only thing saving PCs now is that they always offer a higher performance advantage. The core gamer you talk about specifically only exists in the PC space. And they are nothing compared to the millions of "core gamers" that exist in the cosnoles space.

And no, its not "easier" to manage anything on PC.

Yes it is. Try managing your patches for games easily on a console. Once the gen ends you are screwed because services are shutdown and no more patches. On pc its jsut an exe file. you can store it seperately and reinstall your games at will without the worry of the patches vanishing. I still got games from 90s and 00s with their patches.

Old gen consoles where plug and play. Now that devs cut corners and expect the gamers to be their beta testers more and more bugs creep in which require patches.

And as for the core gamer I am referring too most have started on consoles and have slowly evovled onto PC due to being fed up with the direction consoles have gone to. I have 3 mates who never played PC before this gen and now they are PC exclusive and bigger PC gamers then I am.

No, you are right. With PCs you can do a lot more. But as you also pointed out, not everyone uses those features. Those that do will be buying or building a PC with those things in mind and thats all well and good. But a majority of the public, couldn't really be bothered. The most majority of the peple out tehre have is a laptop. Thats it, and in most cases its actually a netbook.

People will be shocked if they knew how many people don't even know what an GTX or R9 is. But everyone (and their dog) know s what a playstation, xbox or nintendo is. Hell, my mum till this day refers to everything videogame related as nintendo lol.

You are talking about problems that don't exist yet. Yes, online only games get shut down but thats the same everywhere. Even if it weren't what patches are you talking about. For consoles you boot up the game, if there is a patch it prompts you to download it. if there isn't/you don't havean internet connection the game just plays anyways. And these new consoles do this downloading and updating in the background.

This coe gamer you are talking about that started on consoles and slowly evolved to PC...... I am not gonna make this a PC vs Console argument cause that is what this thread was designed to avoid or alleviate.... Being fed up with the direction consoles have gone??? Anyways, everyone will have their reasons to do what they are doing. That doesn't make what they are doing right or wrong. Its just what works for them.

But no, PCs are not "easier" to manage than consoles. Maybe they have more longevity. No argument there. But they are not "easier" to manage. That is what this post was about.

Single player games - I usually go with PC.  Games looked the best on PC.  No subjectivity here.

Multiplayer games (with exception to MMOs and MOBAs) - I usually go with consoles.  More subjective but...   In general, multiplayer communities are better on consoles.  Too many cheaters on PC multiplayers.  Servers are better and easier to find games on consoles.  I know there are good FPS communities on PC such as counter strike and older battlefields, but I don't like counter strike and I didn't buy PC version of BF4.  Titanfall PC community is supposedly already dead.  MOST IMPORTANTLY, most of my friends have consoles and not gaming PCs.
