Forums - Gaming - Putting the console vs PC debate to rest...... Once and for all.

A lot of your points, like price-to-performance and userbility, are off.

A PC easily offers the best price-to-performance at middle to end of a generation. A $1000 PC can be your home PC ($350 value), along with a videogame machine. It will be able to play games to the max when the consoles are starting to show their age. Take Skyrim, for example. The console version was good at best, but the PC version was spectacular with mods. Also, no need to pay for online, which saves $50-60 a year, and games are MUCH cheaper overall.

Userbility, consoles>PC>streaming. With streaming, you have to worry about upgrading the firmware of the base hardware, along with holding a steady internet connection. When your internet is down, under maintenance, etc., you are out of luck. Plus, your point about streaming in terms of price is off, too. Streaming is currently more expensive, if PS Now is any indication.

I put in all the facts as they relate to every model. I am not saying on eis better than the other as I have my own personal preferences. But it doesn't cahnge that these are the facts as they are. I am not expecting all or anyone to agree with me or anyone explanation that I gave. i just figured to give a template by which reasonable discussions on the issues and limitations may be made. The fact that its this long only goes to show how complicated it all is and why anyone coming in and saying this one thing is better than that is talking aoutta their ass.

If you look at what you have said, you will see that i also covered that very scenario.

While I did agree with the majority of your facts, some of them were not factual and can't hold much water beyond a limited amount of instances.  Primarily I disagree that you could build a PC for the same price as current gen consoles and expect the same performance on current titles.

"Yes, it is true that you can get PC hardare at console prices that can for the most part match the performance of consoles. But anyone that only tels you this is not really being honest. To accomplish that you have to get really creative with your shopping and seek out to best possible deals to build the most const effective PC."

So with this statement are you considering the possibility of purchasing from the second hand market? I don't think it's possible to get the same performance for the same price on PCs for 99% of people, even with some thrifty shopping.  The price vs performance discussion leans toward console and has always been an inherent advantage because you're mass producing a device of one single spec rather than buying a la carte.  Then, there's as you later mentioned the cost of the Operating System (we should assume that all items will be purchased legitimately and new, otherwise you might as well say, "well I can go buy a barely used console from someone for $100 less than retail and that would just plain dilute the point you're trying to get across) which is around $100 for the basic edition right? That's already a quarter of your budget.

Now, when it comes to performance we can't do a direct comparison regardless. That's just like comparing likewise specced PCs vs likewise specced Macs. They will still behave, function and perform differently with different benchmarks even though the hardware is the same, because each OS is designed with a different mindset.  So a PC that had precisely the same hardware as a PS4 would =/= the same performance - Again we go back to how the engines are being scaled vs being optimized, and how you have one platform designed to be open nature with infinite customizability and tons of processes running that you don't need at all, vs a closed OS environment streamlined to the metal pulling every trick in the book to reach maximum efficiency.  As you said, one relies on brute force while the other is refined and elegant.

I think I am gonna add a TL;DR here. Though mainly because my thoughts on it are already being neatly expressed by others who share my opinion.

Just gonna put this here, it's gonna go on forever and will never stop. Peeps will keep on defending their product of choice...

Exactly. Wonderful post.

In addition, Its the intial investment that's the problem with buying a PC strictly for gaming like done with consoles. Which is why console drop in price.

I only read enough to make sure you pointed out the performance/cost benefits of consoles. That seems to be the main point that most PC gamers can't comprehend. I'll probably read the rest later as it seems to be very well put together, but I'm sure it's all stuff I know and even said in these forums already.

After reading that I still think Console>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>others.

Honestly anyone who thinks either camp is vastly superior, doesn't know what they are talking about.  Another thing to keep in mind is that not all consoles are the same.  For instance I could EASILY build a PC with Xbox One performance for $400  (This would include the OS and all parts would be new).   However if I had to build a PS4-level PC it would  cost me ~$600.

All this arguing and I'm just sitting here enjoying both ^^

Yeah I would say that the final cost of either a PC or console depends on how someone uses it.  Either one can cost more.  Here are my smartest users:

1)  The Poorest gamer:  This person should get a $300 budget PC and only play games he/she gets on steam sales.  This configuration will cost next to nothing.

2)  The Casual Console Gamer:  This person only wants a few AAA games a year.  So he/she owns a console and may not even pay for PS+.

3)  The Heavy Gamer:  (Like Me) this person loves gaming and plays at least a few hours every day.  If this is you, and you have the money, you would be insane to not own a PC in addition to your console of choice.  Owning a $1000 PC will get you near next-gen visuals in some titles and allow you to save buckets of cash every year playing all the hit games you missed (Seriously I can spend $50 and get 10 amazing games on steam that are only a year old, and they will have mod support).  I recommend a PS4 of course because half of MS's exclusives come to PC within a year.

Great post! Summed it all up pretty nicely in a neat and easy to read (minus the misspellings) format that should be informative for all those who are unbiased and fair minded on the subject. Plus it is all the truth IMHumbleO. The two simply cannot be compared apples to apples in the way competing consoles and no other generation of consoles has this been truer than than current gen.

All that said this will NOT, I repeat, NOT end the PC/console debate once and for all or even once for that matter. People are just gonna prefer one to the other and will be blind to the facts to the max. ◄ (That bit rhymes there. Didn't do it on purpose; it just came out that way.) And we will see the obligatory well why don't you go buy a PC then or PC sucks etc.

But still, thanks for trying and for putting together such a cogent and poignant post.
