Only considering the initial costs instead of the total costs and ignoring the follow-up costs or (even worse) monthly downpayments is one of the big reasons, more and more people have such tight budgets... and that includes expensive phone contracts with high-end smartphones "for only $99", car-leasing, gas-guzzling SUVs with much horsepower, big TVs and other luxury items "on credit", alluring credit cards and so on.
But ignorance is bliss, it will all work out. Yeah, right!
