Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo currently has $4.7 billion in the bank

Nintendo spent 6 billion in two years?

No, they spent (or lost) $5.3 Billion in two years. They have $3.2 Billlion in Short-Term investments and $4.7 Billion in cash and deposits which are assets for the company. The article further mentions that the total assets are for $10 Billion. $10 Billion in assets is not the same as $10 Billion in cash and deposits though.

Basically yeah, Nintendo lost/spent money over the course of these two years.

So what? According to Yahoo finance,

Apple has 6 month average current assets of $75 billion, http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bs?s=aapl&ql=1
Microsoft has 6 month average current assets of $107 billion, http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bs?s=msft&ql=1
Sony has 12 month average current assets of $41 billion http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bs?s=SNE&annual
And... according to Nintendo's Annual report, they have current assets of less than $12.7 billion http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2013/annual1303e.pdf (page 24) And total assets of $15.4 billion. In other words, Microsoft could buy Nintendo 6 times with just current assets.

What's your point?

These companies are hardly comparable in scale. Nintendo is a gaming company, not a computer giant. Do you think the gaming division is responsible for $13 billion of MS's current assets?

It's probably not even half of that.

There was a Forbes article a few months ago that valued the Xbox division at $23 billion so it must have some very expensive assets.

For those looking for the in between numbers, here you go (in Yen, with some rounding done for my calculations):

  2010 2011 2012 2013 2014
Current Assets 1.59T 1.47T 1.14T 1.19T 1.02T
Total Assets 1.76T 1.67T 1.37T 1.45T 1.31T
Current Liabilities 407.54B 333.3B 155.44B 194.48B 155.65B
Total Liabilities 424.4B 352.44B 177.38B 220.36B 187.97B
Total Assets less Liabilities 1.34T 1.32T 1.19T 1.23T 1.12T
3/31 Exchange Rate .0108 .0121 .0122 .0106 .0097
Effective Total Assets less Liabilities in Dollars 14.47B 15.97B 14.52B 13.04B 10.86B

The company really isn't in a bad position. The main reason their cash is so much lower in US dollars is nothing other than the exchange rate.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Where all the cash at? o.o

I'm going to parrot myself a lot in this thread...

Yes you are, good luck with that

@OP
They are actually doing fine. They can take this for decades at this rate.

But..Who the hell keeps so much money as Working capital? They probably don't need half of that liquidity.

Really, is that a thing of the games (or japonese) industry? Maybe Forex protection?  Does risk justify that?
How come stakeholders agree to let them have so much stationary money?

Wow thats alot less than alot of Nintendo fans have been going on about. I thought they could bleed 1 billion a year for 30 years?

It  is quite the opposite, they are better than expected...

They just moved their resources through the balance sheet. Instead of being named "cash" they are named as "short term investment", among others.

4.7 billion? That's not really a lot for a company like Nintendo.

I don't know if $23b means that's how much the assets are worth, but how much the whole division would cost if they were to buy it.  I'm pretty sure that a division is worth more than the assets they own.  Right?
