Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo currently has $4.7 billion in the bank

So what? According to Yahoo finance,

Apple has 6 month average current assets of $75 billion, http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bs?s=aapl&ql=1
Microsoft has 6 month average current assets of $107 billion, http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bs?s=msft&ql=1
Sony has 12 month average current assets of $41 billion http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bs?s=SNE&annual
And... according to Nintendo's Annual report, they have current assets of less than $12.7 billion http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2013/annual1303e.pdf (page 24) And total assets of $15.4 billion. In other words, Microsoft could buy Nintendo 6 times with just current assets.

What's your point?

Firstly I think the OP was simply stating the facts for interests sake, not supposing to wow us.

Secondly:

Apple 80000 staff

MS 120000 staff

Sony 145000 staff

Nintendo 7000 staff

Nintendo is and always has been a much smaller company who simply has much smaller revenue potential.

Having said that they have more than occasionally been more profitable than all of Sony and despite poor financials in the last couple of years have historically (and cumulatively) far greater net profit than either Sony's gaming division or the Xbox division, by a good margin.

Ahead of Nintendo’s annual shareholders’ meeting, Nintendo has released a new document detailing the company’s assets, including the current amount of cash the company has in the bank. Whereas in 2012 Nintendo reportedly had $10 billion in the bank, the company now reports that it has about $4.7 billion in “cash and deposits”, or cash on hand. Nintendo also has a further $3.2 billion in short-term investments. In fact, although Nintendo’s current cash on hand is much lower than it was in 2012, the company still has about $10 billion in current assets, meaning that including everything they expect to make back in the next year (sale of stock, return on investments, etc), Nintendo has about the same amount in current assets as it had cash on hand in 2012. Once you add in Nintendo’s non-current assets, such as buildings and equipment, Nintendo’s total assets come out to about $13 billion.

Nintendo’s 74th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Friday the 27th. We will keep you updated on all the latest developments from the meeting, including Iwata’s approval rating when it becomes available.

This is kind of comparing apples and oranges.

You need to subtract current liabilities from current assets in both years to get a better idea.

Since 2012 Nintendo has posted some losses,  paid out their regular minimum dividend to shareholders, and bought back about $1  Billion of shares.  Do the math.

So basically you're confirming that the value provided up there isn't necessarily based on assets but an analysis on how much Xbox might be worth based off of Nintendo's "multiples"?

Basically yes, their analysis is not based on assets or anything of the sort.  I think if people really want to know what the Xbox division is worth then MS should release thorough, clear and transparent financials for Xbox division alone.

Can someone explain to me in simplistic terms what happened to the rest of the cash?

Nintendo invested at lot of money in unkown projects and bought back it owns shares ($1.1B) from the family of Nintendos old CEO Yamauchi after he died.

Low numbers. Expected around 17B like some fans like to fill their mouths with.

Wow! We all know that Sony is practically bankrupt but its liabilities are really abysmal.

No wonder that the big rating agencies already rated Sony "junk".

Is the company healthy or in a good position? Nothing dire or anything like that

Perhaps the problem was they had 10 billion in cash lying around in 2012 when they should have already spent a chunk on dominating with the Wii U.
