Looks like Nintendo needs to sell a building.

Nintendo has zero debt ...that's the part you are forgetting and that is only cash ..this is not including assets ...Nintendo is far from financial trouble

I think there is some sarcasm in his remarks.

Can someone explain to me in simplistic terms what happened to the rest of the cash?

Nintendo invested at lot of money in unkown projects and bought back it owns shares ($1.1B) from the family of Nintendos old CEO Yamauchi after he died.

Is the company healthy or in a good position? Nothing dire or anything like that

Nothing dire. Still losing money. Not exactly healthy. Apparently nothing concerning enough to fire Iwata over though, because he's been voted back again.

So basically you're confirming that the value provided up there isn't necessarily based on assets but an analysis on how much Xbox might be worth based off of Nintendo's "multiples"?

Basically yes, their analysis is not based on assets or anything of the sort.  I think if people really want to know what the Xbox division is worth then MS should release thorough, clear and transparent financials for Xbox division alone.

For comparison, by Nintendo's PSR multiple Bloomberg estimated the Xbox division was worth $17 billion less than seven months earlier.

It seems to be based on relative current market perfomance (essentially, stock trades n' stuff), but I don't know how they're isolating Xbox from the rest of MS to even do the calculation... but it's not like I'm an afficionado. In general it just seems like there are a lot of variable factors involved in the estimation method and we can't really know without MS just telling us.

Did you miss the part where I said IMO?

It's not a matter of opinion...

It isn't? That's funny.

It is, isn't it?

Buy the PlayStation division from Sony if they go under (very unlikely) and have the number one console and handheld in the market.

WiiU and PSVita for the WIN.

This is the Game of Thrones

Most of it is gone because Yen has lost value against dollar and Nintendo make financials in Yen, while we discussing Dollar (why we ever do that). In Yen Nintendo still has lost money, but not so much against 2012, more against 2011 and 2010. Well, the answer to that is 3DS and WiiU.

For those looking for the in between numbers, here you go (in Yen, with some rounding done for my calculations):

  2010 2011 2012 2013 2014
Current Assets 1.59T 1.47T 1.14T 1.19T 1.02T
Total Assets 1.76T 1.67T 1.37T 1.45T 1.31T
Current Liabilities 407.54B 333.3B 155.44B 194.48B 155.65B
Total Liabilities 424.4B 352.44B 177.38B 220.36B 187.97B
Total Assets less Liabilities 1.34T 1.32T 1.19T 1.23T 1.12T
3/31 Exchange Rate .0108 .0121 .0122 .0106 .0097
Effective Total Assets less Liabilities in Dollars 14.47B 15.97B 14.52B 13.04B 10.86B

The company really isn't in a bad position. The main reason their cash is so much lower in US dollars is nothing other than the exchange rate.

This really should be put into the OP.
