Which looks better

Tech demo 2011 382 29.09%

E3 2014 928 70.68%

Total:1,310

On a more "related to the OP" note, I like the new style more because the art style makes in-game footage that manages to look like boxart at the same time. I find that amazing.

That's a nice children's handbook you got there, mate.

The translation is animation, the actual english word from which it comes from. And that word doesn't convey any kind of drawing style, unlike the word cartoon. Misused by many to mean everything that is animated. That's playing with semantics, but you seem to want to keep this going.

Cartoon doesnt convey a specific drawing style, and even using your definition, western animation (cartoons) has far more variations in style than "anime"

But it's not like you're gonna convince me I'm wrong, and I cant convinve you either. I'm mainly just unable to see "anime=/=cartoons" without saying "ha ha, nope"

It's ok. I feel the same about what you post on VGC as a whole.

Here what I see when people talk about cartoons (as opposed to animation in general):

As opposed to things like:

May be a culture thing. We make that distinction where I'm from.

The way you use the word makes me think that everything that is animated, you'll call cartoons. Even stuff like the Final Fantasy movies (SW and AC)...

Funny coming from the guy using a Wikipedia definition.

Funny indeed.

Because words can't possibly have multiple or different meanings.

The etymology of anime is animation. That doesn't mean the word can't have a different or other meaning. After all, many words have vastly different meanings than their etymology. Cartoons are animation as well you now.

I really hope you never have to write a master thesis if you're that quick to pass judgement on the definition of words/concepts.

Nintendo changed the artstyle for every 3d zelda, except MM because it used the same engine and assets. even tp is different from oot.

TP is not thatdifferent from OoT. It's a little bit darker, but still very similar to the models used in Smash Bros Melee for example.

Zelda was always marketed as a fantasy game, up until WW.

"Zelda was always marketed as a fantasy game, period."

Corrected.

As usual the minority is the loudest. I'm happy with the poll results, very happy with the new art style. We've got enough 'realistic' western fantasy.

What's realistic about TP's style anyway, it's just a slightly darker cartoon.

In that case, Skyrim is also a slightly darker cartoon.

And you do realize that those "realistic" western fantasy games have and will continue to obliterate Zelda in sales?

I love the artstyle. It's beautiful, and the best they could have possibly done on the Wii U, imo. But in terms of sales, it won't do as well. That "minority" is like 33% of the gamerbase, who just look at graphics and then turn away. Shallow, yes, but that's how you get sales, and sales is exactly what the Wii U needs right now.

Those probably wouldn't buy a WiiU anyway.
Some day they'll grow up, meanwhile I'll enjoy stuff like Herdy Gerdy, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Valkyria Chronicles, PoP 2008, Catherine, Ni No Kuni, Pikmin 3 and this. Games you remember for their unique art style, not for how good the floor textures look.
I'm glad not every AAA game has to end up like this http://games.on.net/2014/06/ubisoft-game-the-review/

Question: Lets assume darker toned Zelda games sells better than lightly toned Zelda games. Would the first be more profitable? (Note that a more naturalistic game means there are more development costs involved and that isn't considering implicit costs - such as marketing to the "hardcore" non nintendo fans to buy a Wii U (face it Zelda fans will buy the game no matter what.) I am pretty sure the brogamers you guys are talking about, whom the darker style appeals to, dont have Wii Us and would not buy one for a single game. From a business perspective it makes sense why Nintendo would choose this style for an open world game.

Darker colours with less detail versus lighter colours with more detail. Both styles look good.

I think the Tech demo had its appeal, but in this case I think they did the best they possably could with the art style.  I personally like the look of the art style better than the Tech demo.  I think that if the Wii U was more powerfull then the artstyle in the tech demo might be better, but considering what they have to work with, it looks georgeous, like wind waker and Twilight princess had a baby.

Ha ha. Nope.
