Which looks better

Tech demo 2011 382 29.09%

E3 2014 928 70.68%

Total:1,310

The new artstyle is superior, but won't sell as much as a tech-demo artstyle would have. Just the way things are.

I love the art style...
I can't wait to see more...
I love that they are willing to take risks visually with Zelda...
I only wish they would do that with other series...

Have a nice day...

Also, most people who dislike the cartoony Zeldas are the fake fans who grew up with Ocarina of Time and never again played a game in the series apart from Twilight Princess (which was the same game).

These people have a very distorted image of what Zelda is supposed to be like. Zelda is not supposed to be a realistic fantasy game with a badass character. From the beginning, it always had a sort of cartoon style to it - just take a look at the first Legend of Zelda artwork or A Link to the Past for examples.

After Aonuma took over, however, it was established that 3D Zeldas would always have different artstyles and it has been like that for over 10 years now. Still, most games remain not hyper realistic for a very specific reason - Zelda is not hyper realistic in its essence. And that's what some people really need to start understanding.

If you want a medieval fantasy open-world game with realistic graphics, there's a lot of options out there. The Elder Scrolls and The Witcher are two very notable ones. Zelda isn't.

No, we just don't want to see a cartoony Zelda. I liked The Wind Waker, but would have preferred it be in OOT graphics.

A lot of fans who seem to like the Skyward Sword look seem to be trying to convince themselves to like it. "Zelda is not supposed to be a realistic fantasy game with a badass character." What? So Ocarina of Time, the highest selling and most loved Zelda game isn't a real Zelda game?  And A Link to the Past looks closer to Ocarina than The Wind Waker and Skyward Sword...

The reason everytime they show off a Zelda tech demo it looks realistic is because they know that's what people want. They are doing this Skyward Sword style because it's easier to develop for. That's it. Google "The Legend of Zelda," and 90% of what you see is the "realistic" graphics. Because that is what Zelda is to most people.

omg!!!! Yes, cuz if they had different graphics the game would of sold 6mil-8mil instead they have these graphics so it'll sell 2mil-3mil lifetime -_-

So for the people who agree with the OP, are you saying that Majority of all Zelda fans only care about graphics? Good to kno :0

There's actually correlation between artstyle and sales.

Ocarina of Time despite being on a 32m userbase sold more than 7 million copies, while Wind Waker sold like 3 million less (4m ltd iirc).

Twilight Princess being so similar to Ocarina of Time, not only on gameplay but also graphics wise, helped the game to pull more than 7 million copies, meanwhile Skyward Sword has not even reached 4 million ltd.

As much as I love Zelda U, being like the tech demo would have generated a lot more hype throught non Nintendo/Zelda fans, just like Twilight Princes in 2004-2006.

WRONG. ocarina of time sold more than wind waker, fact. but saying it was because of the artstyle makes no sense. it makes as much sense as saying it was because wind waker had too much water. you are ignoring everything that people actually think when they want to buy a zelda.

Says the person that was a child when it launched....

I was your age when that game was both unveiled and launched and trust me, people threw up in their MOUTH over the graphics. The internet was a shit storm the likes I have never seen since. The "kiddy" imagine single handedly killed that game commercially. By the time the reviews came out, and people saw that it was still a good game, no one cared anymore. It was too late.

That does sum it up pretty good. I LOVE Zelda but didn't touch the game because of the graphics.  People saying toon Link wasn't a factor either were a kid at the time, or are in denial.  That said, Zelda U is nothing like WW, and I think it will be a huge hit.

As usual the minority is the loudest. I'm happy with the poll results, very happy with the new art style. We've got enough 'realistic' western fantasy.

What's realistic about TP's style anyway, it's just a slightly darker cartoon.

In that case, Skyrim is also a slightly darker cartoon.

And you do realize that those "realistic" western fantasy games have and will continue to obliterate Zelda in sales?

I love the artstyle. It's beautiful, and the best they could have possibly done on the Wii U, imo. But in terms of sales, it won't do as well. That "minority" is like 33% of the gamerbase, who just look at graphics and then turn away. Shallow, yes, but that's how you get sales, and sales is exactly what the Wii U needs right now.

http://www.petitiononline.com/EG0609/petition.html

There was a super popular petition back in 2002 with over 10,000 signatures (which was a lot back then) where people wanted The Wind Waker to have OOT graphics. Also, EGM did an April Fools joke about Wind Waker being remade in OOT graphics and people got super excited over it. With many claiming they will finally play Wind Waker.

Are there people who actually believe the cel shaded graphics didn't affect sales at all?

lol. lol at all of you. If the zelda tech demo were to have been the reveal you all would be over it. So predictable.

Thats whats wrong with Nintendo. You just accept what ever they give you and love it anyway. Please I employ you to open your eyes and realise that you are helping Nintendo kill themselves.

True story, me and my brother for the fist time were in a game shop together since like 2001. The nintendo games were next to the 2nd hand PS3 games. He looked at me and said whats happened to Nintendo?

I looked back and said what you mean? He said well you would never think the same people who made the snes created that pad u thing. I looked at him with a blank face and when i was going to answer he stopped me and said no bubbles but just look at them!!! Just have a good look. Thats not the Nintendo we grew up with. He laughed and walked on.

Moral of the story people knpw who and what nintendo are but they continue to piss on what they used to be. I blame the Nintendo faithful who congratulate everything they do. Good or bad.

Its the same thing as owning a company and having a few yes man who will say yes to everything thus making the company thinking they did right. When really they are doing the worst thing possible.

The real reason Nintendo never created a Zelda like the tech demo is because the U can not create a game that looks like that. FACT FACT!!!!!

It really pisses me off because i really want to like Nintendo. But its like they do dare best to purposely alienate me and many others. I cant be the only person who thinks like this because the sales speak volumes.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

The Windwaker reveal did cause an unrivaled shitstorm. To my regret, I waited several years before giving it a chance and I was blown away by the game(minus the shards section) and it's my favorite Zelda style overall. That being said, I love both the 2011 and 2014 look. I feel there is more personality to the 2014 look.

Let's be real about sales. There were many factors, but the superficial drivel that comes from many people concerning graphics and raw power, I'm sure that WW was negatively impacted by it's look.

Also all anime is a cartoon, but not all cartoons are anime. Anime is a genre of cartoon.

Imo, this new WiiU Zelda looks breathtaking. But then, I liked WW's graphics when it was first revealed.

To me, the 2011 E3 Zelda tech demo now looks a bit outdated. It looked nice but I was never that impressed. In fact, I found the Bird demo more beautiful and impressive.

You LOVE Zelda but didn't touch the game because of cel shaded graphics? Seriously? Well let me tell you that you missed out on a great game.

Were you not comfortable enough in your own masculinity to play a game with colourful graphics? Listening to too many internet haters?

If each iteration of Zelda was the same style but with better graphics (like most franchises) then the series still  wouldn't be so keenly

anticapated after nearly 30 years.
