Cartoony looks don't always turn people off. The Borderlands series has managed to outsell a lot of other realistic shooters and that has a weird cartoon look to it.

The next Zelda just has to up the epic factor. The open world aspect sounds like such a great step in the right direction.

Comics, anime, hand drawn looks =/= cartoon look

A lot of people just lump them under cartoony looks though.

Also, this move reminds me of Super Mario 3D World. 3D World is a GREAT game, but sales are bad because it's not what people wanted. They wanted a 64/Galaxy type game. Nintendo decided to go with a sequel to 3D Land and it didn't work out... at all.

People want an Ocarina of Time/Twilight Princess like style, and Nintendo is deciding to go with Skyward Sword again. Disappointing.

I honestly think it's due to budget. Since Yamauchi, outside of a few small examples, development has been extremely consevative. They don't want to take risks with their money.

The difference between the 2011 Zelda and the 2014 Zelda is millions and millions of dollars. The same goes for Mario. A brand new, super epic Mario 64 part 2 would cost alot more to make than what we got instead which was basically a port of a 3DS game with HD graphics and a few gameplay tweaks.

One makes me question Link's gender, the other not so much.

I think we know which one Wright would want more.

To all you people saying artstyle shouldn't matter.
It does. First of all, it interferes with the image people have built up about Zelda over the years, and it ditched an esthetic that westerners love (fantasy) for one that's niche in the west (anime).

Look at the sales of cartoony zelda games on handhelds and consoles. Then at the sales of fantasy zelda games, and do the math.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Anime is Japanese cartoon. Legend of Korra is a cartoon yet looks like a Japanese anime.

Take the artstyle of any game that exists and turn it into a tv show and it would all be classified as cartoon. Does anyone even want to play a game that looks exactly like the real world? Not me at least.

when you post millions of people saying they bought oot and tp for the art style alone, we can talk.

Nintendo changed Wind Waker 2 for Twilight Princess. Nintendo itself knew about it. No point in arguing the opposite.

Nintendo changed the artstyle for every 3d zelda, except MM because it used the same engine and assets. even tp is different from oot.

cartoon is a form of two-dimensional illustrated visual art. While the specific definition has changed over time, modern usage refers to a typically non-realistic or semi-realistic drawing or painting intended for satirecaricature, or humor, or to the artistic style of such works. An artist who creates cartoons is called a cartoonist.[1]

Ok? Thanks.

Japanese Anime is... Japanese Anime. Just like Cartoon is one of the many different drawing and animation styles in the west, Japanime also has plenty of styles. If you call them all cartoons, you're mistaken.

Anime is a cartoon. From Japan. There is no such thing as Japanese anime. Anime is always Japanese.

The Legend of Korra is a cartoon. From the US.

Besides, a lot of things in the Zelda trailer looked realistic, like the grass, shadows, lighting and the trees/foliage. Only the characters are clearly non-realistic.
