This is a literal translation of the word cartoons to Japanese and it says anime. I dunno what else I could need to show you in this situation. So yes. In America, Family Guy is a cartton. In Japan, Family Guy is a [translation of cartoon to japanese]

Oh snap, the translation is anime.

That does sum it up pretty good. I LOVE Zelda but didn't touch the game because of the graphics.  People saying toon Link wasn't a factor either were a kid at the time, or are in denial.  That said, Zelda U is nothing like WW, and I think it will be a huge hit.

http://www.petitiononline.com/EG0609/petition.html

There was a super popular petition back in 2002 with over 10,000 signatures (which was a lot back then) where people wanted The Wind Waker to have OOT graphics. Also, EGM did an April Fools joke about Wind Waker being remade in OOT graphics and people got super excited over it. With many claiming they will finally play Wind Waker.

Are there people who actually believe the cel shaded graphics didn't affect sales at all?

It affected sales at the time, but that doesnt mean it will affect sales now. Much different environment for Zelda U.

That tech demo was bland, boring, yawn-inducing, generic, uninspired. Why would anybody want that? WHY??? I'm glad Zelda U won't be like EVERY OTHER GAME IN EXISTENCE. Anyone who wants those graphics should quit gaming forever, as they are boring and therefore like boring games with boring graphics and not fun games with interesting graphics. I like fun games with good graphics - not realistic because realistic game always look BAD. Deny this all you want, but go ahead, show me a game from ten years ago that still looks good today? What's that? Only games like Wind Waker still look good today? Imagine that.

lol what. I prefer Zelda U's art style by a mile but that tech demo was amazing.

Unfortunately you are 100% right.

People want a realistic TP/OOT Zelda. Google images of The LEgend of Zelda - 90% of them are that art style. See here: https://www.google.com/search?q=the+legend+of+zelda&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=gJusU5iiLZL_oQSUhYCoBA&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ

The fact is, most people prefer the OOT art style. It fits Zelda more. Skyward Sword got ZERO hype. Compare that to Twilight Princess' hype and it's not even close. And TP got a TON of hype BECAUSE it was a realistic Zelda. See here for the famous E3 2004 reaction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE2Dc1sx71U

And before people say "The art style has nothing to do with sales" I disagree, I know many people that didn't bother with The Wind Waker and Skyward Sword because of the art style. The Wind Waker's HD sales have been atrocious compared to Ocarina of Time 3D. And before you point out console sales remember the 3DS started out slow too. In fact, the 3DS sold LESS at that point when Ocarina sold a million than the Wii U is now.

I love The Wind Waker, it's my second favorite Zelda behind Ocarina. But I won't deny the art style really turns people off. Skyward Sword even more so.

Nintendo needs a Twilight Princess more than a Skyward Sword. A game that people will line up for, wait for for years with anticipitation, scream when they see a preview, get tons of hype.... this may be a great game but I won't deny I am also turned off by the art style. The Wii U sales are sluggish and need any help it can get. Twilight Princess is not just the most hyped Zelda game ever, but one of the most hyped games ever period. It sold the Wii to gamers (compared to Wii Sports which sold it to non-gamers).

Nintendo blew it IMO.

when you post millions of people saying they bought oot and tp for the art style alone, we can talk.

And: http://www.wiiuonly.com/2013/05/eiji-aonuma-on-fate-of-wind-waker-2.html

As some of you know, at E3 2004, we unveiled the game that would become Twilight Princess, the realistic Zelda game, and we announced that it was developed by the team that had been developing Wind Waker 2. Actually, there was a reason that that decision was made at the time. At one point, I had heard that even Wind Waker, which had reached the million mark in sales, had become sluggish in North America, where the market was much healthier than in Japan. I asked NOA why this was. What I was told was that the toon-shading technique was, in fact, giving the impression that this Zelda was for a younger audience and that, for this reason, it alienated the upper teen audience that had represented the typical Zelda player. Having heard that, I began to worry about whether Wind Waker 2, which used a similar presentation, was something that would actually sell.

People didn't like the look of WW and it's widely known that a lot of people passed on it because of the childish look. An other user said you were quite young at the time of Wind Waker's original release... That could explain why you're clueless about all this.

Fans may not want to face the fact, but non-fans very much buy games based on image, and a dark "cool" Zelda would draw more gamers than a cartoon one. And I say this as someone who likes the new style.

Oh snap, the translation is anime.

That's a nice children's handbook you got there, mate.

The translation is animation, the actual english word from which it comes from. And that word doesn't convey any kind of drawing style, unlike the word cartoon. Misused by many to mean everything that is animated. That's playing with semantics, but you seem to want to keep this going.

Funny coming from the guy using a Wikipedia definition.

I really wanted for them to keep the same artstyle of the demo, but after seeing the E3 video, I have no complains... Both look amazing :)

Cartoon doesnt convey a specific drawing style, and even using your definition, western animation (cartoons) has far more variations in style than "anime"

But it's not like you're gonna convince me I'm wrong, and I cant convinve you either. I'm mainly just unable to see "anime=/=cartoons" without saying "ha ha, nope"
