Which looks better

Tech demo 2011 382 29.09%

E3 2014 928 70.68%

Total:1,310

I was really surprised by how good Zelda U looks. It really is a unique artstyle. And I think I turned gay when I saw Link using his bow and arrow because he looks really handsome!

Nintendo changed the artstyle for every 3d zelda, except MM because it used the same engine and assets. even tp is different from oot.

TP is not thatdifferent from OoT. It's a little bit darker, but still very similar to the models used in Smash Bros Melee for example.

Zelda was always marketed as a fantasy game, up until WW.

TP seems closer to SS than OoT, to me.

Really?
To me, one clearly looks like a refined version of the other, while one looks like anime with a watercolour twist.

lol. lol at all of you. If the zelda tech demo were to have been the reveal you all would be over it. So predictable.

Thats whats wrong with Nintendo. You just accept what ever they give you and love it anyway. Please I employ you to open your eyes and realise that you are helping Nintendo kill themselves.

Ugh... Why do I keep replying to this kind of thing?

How is this a proof that we just accept anything Nintendo gives us?
This simply proves a lot of Nintendo fans are OPEN-MINDED.
I like BOTH realistic looking Zeldas and non-realistic ones. If they gave us the tech demo look I would be all over it, because it looked amazing - however, I do prefer this new look.

It's not like I'm getting super excited about Wii Music or something.
This is the very same Nintendo we grew up with. The difference is you grew up and started having a distorted look at them.
When you were a kid, you didn't care about "realistic vs. cartoony graphics". You just played good, fun games on your SNES.
Now, you grew up and think that if a console doesn't have a generic Xbox-like controller and a game doesn't have realistic graphics and edgy characters, it sucks because it's for little kids.

Um.... I don't know if you know this, but the SNES and NES kinda couldn't represent realistic graphics, so everything was stylized in that recognisable 8 or 16-bit fashion.

If you want to know how people imagined the game worlds of that era, you have to look at the game manuals and the Zelda cartoon. And it's western fantasy through and through. Noone viewed Zelda as an anime.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Yeah, the Super Mario Super Show Zelda cartoon was definitely not an anime, lol. I still watch it with my nephews every week on my PLEX server through the Wii U!

when you post millions of people saying they bought oot and tp for the art style alone, we can talk.

Here: http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/51323/zelda-twilight-princess-was-a-result-of-fan-reaction-to-wind-waker/

And: http://www.wiiuonly.com/2013/05/eiji-aonuma-on-fate-of-wind-waker-2.html

As some of you know, at E3 2004, we unveiled the game that would become Twilight Princess, the realistic Zelda game, and we announced that it was developed by the team that had been developing Wind Waker 2. Actually, there was a reason that that decision was made at the time. At one point, I had heard that even Wind Waker, which had reached the million mark in sales, had become sluggish in North America, where the market was much healthier than in Japan. I asked NOA why this was. What I was told was that the toon-shading technique was, in fact, giving the impression that this Zelda was for a younger audience and that, for this reason, it alienated the upper teen audience that had represented the typical Zelda player. Having heard that, I began to worry about whether Wind Waker 2, which used a similar presentation, was something that would actually sell.

People didn't like the look of WW and it's widely known that a lot of people passed on it because of the childish look. An other user said you were quite young at the time of Wind Waker's original release... That could explain why you're clueless about all this.

Thank you. Nintendo knows this. No need to discuss. Proof is right here.

They were both cool looking. I think maybe the reason they're doing this art style is so it's easier to run 1080p 60fps

As usual the minority is the loudest. I'm happy with the poll results, very happy with the new art style. We've got enough 'realistic' western fantasy.

What's realistic about TP's style anyway, it's just a slightly darker cartoon.

In that case, Skyrim is also a slightly darker cartoon.

And you do realize that those "realistic" western fantasy games have and will continue to obliterate Zelda in sales?

I love the artstyle. It's beautiful, and the best they could have possibly done on the Wii U, imo. But in terms of sales, it won't do as well. That "minority" is like 33% of the gamerbase, who just look at graphics and then turn away. Shallow, yes, but that's how you get sales, and sales is exactly what the Wii U needs right now.

Those probably wouldn't buy a WiiU anyway.
Some day they'll grow up, meanwhile I'll enjoy stuff like Herdy Gerdy, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Valkyria Chronicles, PoP 2008, Catherine, Ni No Kuni, Pikmin 3 and this. Games you remember for their unique art style, not for how good the floor textures look.
I'm glad not every AAA game has to end up like this http://games.on.net/2014/06/ubisoft-game-the-review/

I love those games too, Ni no Kuni and Okami were beautiful especially, but you're forgetting that Nintendo actually wants to sell systems.

Realistic games sell the most. That's undebatable,  period. Zelda games that were "realistic", like OoT and TP (focusing on darker colors), sold heaps and moved tons of consoles. The others? Met with a little bit of fan skepticism, and middling sales overall.

They don't want to buy a Wii U because it doesn't look like a "hardcore" console. People now see "hardcore" as being strictly graphics, and the Wii U has been unable to deliver completely in that aspect.

The tech demo was the most "realistic" game I had ever seen. It alone would move so many Wii U units because it would show that the Wii U was capable of more. While I personally prefer this artstyle, lets not pretend that it will do nearly as well as any of the other "realistic" Zeldas, with the exception of MM (which was DoA).

The simple fact that we've had, what, four or five seperate topics over this demonstrates that a lot of the fanbase is torn on the artstyle.

Wrong. I loved

New super mario bros Wii/DS

LittleBigPlanet

Jak Collection

Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time

Sonic Generations was ok.

Reymond games have become good again

Donkey Kong Country Returns was good

I do not have a problem with "kiddy" games. I am actually one of the people that are pissed off that Naughty Dog aint made a Jak game since the PS2 days.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

I wouldn't call Halo realistic, sells great however. I think it has as much to do with playing as a child as the art style itself when it comes to Windwaker. JRPG's also always get flack for emo teens. Link should be a stone faced space marine then all is fine. Well TP came pretty close to stone face link.

I doubt the WiiU can live up to the expectations people have from that tech demo. Plus I don't believe for one second cell shaded graphics are easier to make. It's a lot harder to not make a mess of that than to keep everything muted and dark and let the player's fantasy fill in the gaps.

You can never please the entire fanbase anyway. Gamers don't want change, gamers don't want the same game, gamers don't know what they want. Had ZeldaU kept the tech demo style we would have endless downgrade, resolution, fps, unrealistic enemy behaviour, etc topics. Zelda's gameplay style fits the new art style much better. Play Blodborne if you want dark and realistic combat. (I can't wait for that either)

I agree with you on most points, but there is a big difference between pleasing 90% of the fanbase and pleasing 70% of the fanbase. If Nintendo made a realistic Zelda, I doubt you would see so much heated discussion over how much it would sell. Zelda has had so many artstyles over its lifetime that a darker one would fit right in, if not be make more sense (there's been 2 Zeldas with similar artstyles in a row now).

I get what you're saying with them getting the best graphics possible out of the hardware given, and I appreciate that Nintendo took that route. A darker game @ 720p/30fps with even near the graphical prowess showed during the E3 demo would simply sell more though, if past Zeldas are any indication.
