Nintendo U, or even Uoo, would have been better.
I personally know someone who actually did some research before buying a Wii U. She heard of Wii U, but wasn't sure what it was exactly, so she took a minute to Google the damn thing. Once she finished searching, she understood that this is a new console, and ended up buying the Mario & Luigi bundle (she couldn't find the Mario Kart bundle at all), I think she even convinced her sister to buy one as well. It's not a good name, people shouldn't have to search for something like this to find out if it's a new console (bad Nintendo...bad!), but some people appear to be too lazy to bother googling this stuff if there is confusion.

It's not just random shoppers who ask things like that, when in a gamestop here pre ordering Forza 4 I was asked if I wanted to pre order it for the Xbox or Ps3, it hurt to even have to answer that.

No, but there is a big enough difference between the 2, and lets be honest it would seem that the Xbox crowd is a bit more up-to-date then the Ninty crowd. Why didnt they just name it the Wii 2 or Wee Too? That would have sent a good enough signal IMO.

There is confusion and it's Nintendo's fault. Hard core gamers know all about the Wii U but the public at large may or may not. The Wii already has a high level of market saturation so people aren't necessarily looking to buy another just because it now comes with a tablet. Understand?
Also the name is bad. Wii U. It rhymes with PU which is what you say when you smell a nasty fart. Gamecube was also a terrible name. It's not the end of the world though. It's a great system but Nintendo has made some missteps. I work at a manufacturing company and I meet with the engineers once a week, we discuss this sort of stuff with regards to our products.

Are you sure that wasn't a JB HiFi store? That looks like the typical JB kind of signage, and I'm pretty sure those price stickers are JB-style price stickers.
Anyway, this particular problem isn't really due to Wii/Wii U confusion. I've heard similar confusion happen between PS2 and PS3, PS1 and PS2, etc. Some people just don't pay attention when they're buying games.

Nintendo made a massive blunder with naming the console. Their bread and butter where the casuals last gen, the only group that does not know what a console generation is. Both Sony and MS make it clear with their naming that its all about a new console. Nintendo added a "U" to the end.
