Are you sure that wasn't a JB HiFi store? That looks like the typical JB kind of signage, and I'm pretty sure those price stickers are JB-style price stickers.
Anyway, this particular problem isn't really due to Wii/Wii U confusion. I've heard similar confusion happen between PS2 and PS3, PS1 and PS2, etc. Some people just don't pay attention when they're buying games.
