Forums - Nintendo - What does Nintendo need to do to win next gen?

As a developer(I'm going to remain anonymous so I don't lose my job or any of partners') with fairly close ties to many of the hardware and software manufactures the companies use, I'll say Fusion is only one of the designs nintendo is working on, and Iin my opinion from what I've seen from the designs, I gotta say the technology just isn't there yet for what nintendo is envisioning. Of the designs they were pitching around, they gave a very promising proposal to NVidia and Intel about designing the CPU & GPU for a machine with a custom Titan Black and 4th Gen i7, which would be used in a multimedia device with non-proprietary BD drive, HDD or SSD, with a focus on multitasking the system with a wii u controller(or the next gen counterpart). The last part os pretty much stating their goal is to have the system be able to play a game on the controller while the TV plays netflix, hulu, etc. similar to the snap feature on XB1 but with seperate screens, and includes the ability to play 2 different games (however, I honestly think this will be limited to Virtual Console games or Wii/Wii U games if the system is BC). Also I have to stress all this stuff is in the proposal phase and i would expect to see prototypes behind closed doors until 2016, so the big N to release its console until 2018/2019.

Nintendo won't ever win.  I think the last system before Wii that sold was the SNES.  3rd Party support hurt N64, and gamecube.  But quite frankly if you own a Nintendo it's not because of 3rd party games, it's for the 1st party games.  As long as Nintendo stays profitable, they don't have to be the leader.

reminds me of Wii.

Let me start by saying that what I'm going to post doesn't mean that I don't believe you. I'm neutral to your credibility. But given that you are sharing this info, I have to ask: Why the hell will Nintendo go with Intel and Nvidia when they have always gone to IBM and AMD?

I mean, I could understand if they dropped IBM in favor of an x86 architecture like the rest of the industry, but why going with Intel when they have been long term partners with AMD? And the GPU manufacturer is even more strange, they have always used AMD and it's has been very clear from the last gens that AMD is more open to discuss with console manufacturers than Nvidia, and that's without taking into account that AMD is cheaper than Nvidia making the idea of using a 290X-like performance GPU a lot more feasible.

Also, what is a non-propietary BD drive? Do you mean a drive like the one on the WiiU? Because that one can't play BD movie discs, something odd for a multimedia center.

  1. Get a decent name that does not confuse customers, possibly stay away from the "Wii".
  2. Have launch titles that actually SHOW the consumer what the new controller/features are and not release them sparringly with little hype.
  3. Much better commercial campaign
  4. Target your audience first. Release your big guns within the first year and a half.
  5. Don't release 2 Mario games in the first year (along with other platformers). Put in different genres.
  6. Make your system more up to date graphically to keep the momentum towards the end of the cycle.
  7. Don't make a gimmik for the sake of it. The Wii Mote + next gen graphics is a good solid combo.
  8. Don't rely on third parties to save you.
  9. Stop showing the 50 different controllers you cna use for the system. It's very confusing for the consumer.
  10. Don't release games that have no continuity anymore, or are unimpressive especially early on. Release IP's that show off your system capability.
The Wii released very cheap with a cutting edge feature, but showed off impressive games early on with an impressive commercial campaign(Zelda, Wii Sports/Play, Excite Trucks, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, Mario Party all within the first year). The Wii U managed to literally do many things the total opposite way. It boggles me especially after the Wii lost so much momentum late on that they did that. Ps4 and XBone have the graphics and hardware capability, the Wii U still doesn't convince me and most consumers. I'll buy it in the end but can understand why sales were so lackluster.

The technology was there for what wii was going for, I mean just look at dreamcast and PS2 which both featured cameras which sensed motion based movement in the image, the wii pretty much replaced the camera with a sensor bar, and your body with an IR pointer and gyroscope. The 9th gen design of fusion is similar to MS's view of the discless XB1 or Sony's dual 1080P PS3. The technology just is not there for the price at all.

NVidia has been angry at the console industry for the past 5 years or so since sony left them for AMD and ATi after making RSX for PS3. Which is why Titan's ad campaign bashed PS4 rather than XB1. The company has been pushing money at all 3 of them so they can get a hold of some kind in the console space(because god knows they own the PC market). And when the designs are this early in creation, I'm sure nintendo is giving the same assignment to AMd's R&D, and is simply testing the water with Nvidia since they're doing all that restructing and want to try a way to earn more money.

As with a non-proprietary BD drive, that would be like the ones in the playstation 3 and 4. Which is a 180 for nintendo because the gamecube, wii, and wii u optical discs were all proprietary drives using dvd technology. A similar proprietary device is the PS4 camera and Kinect which use proprietary USB hubs so u can't use them as a regular USB hubs or the cameras natively on a PC.

Thanks for answering.

So I get that Nintedo has several prototypes, some with Nvidia, some with AMD and maybe the same is true for the CPU.

As for the BD drive, I think Nintendo went that way to not only not having to pay royalties to any other Co for the drives but also because going that way made the drives unable to play movies, making them save money from royalties again. If they want to change that approach, it's up to them, not that I'll use it much.
