What do you think Nintendo needs to do to win next gen?

Sell the most hardware, which they wont be doing.

Getting the 3rd party support on a Nintendo console is easier said than done. As a Nintendo fan, I only bought 3rd party games that complement my Nintendo library, but if I want something completely diferent I will go to PC.

Just look at the sales of COD, or AC 3 and 4 on the WiiU and compare them with Lego Undercover or Monster hunter. Most 3rd parties are not going to even try to develop for Nintendo if they know they have to compete with the massive 1st party games.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Well, creating more powerful hardware is not going to have them 'win' as what most gamers seem to think. Nintendo needs to really think outside of the box for the next console - something totally revolutionary but accessible and has a very wide appeal. What exactly this is I don't know. Nintendo will probably focus more on fitness/quality of life with its next console. while may get traditional gamers upset. can be quite lucrative.

Console needs a better name for starters that doesn't confuse consumers.

First thing would be to not try and "win" based on gaming community criteria.

They need to focus on what they're good at. Making fun, surprising games centered around functional design.

Then they need to make people aware of the existance of these games. The E3 treehouse was a great move, but they could still do with more presence.

They need new boxes and presentational material for the Wii U, to properly explain what it's all about, why it's fun, and why you really should get one if you had a Wii, and even if you didn't.

Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System would be the best name if you ask me!

I agree with most of the points, but not all, that zorg1000 already said

Nintendo has to focus on profits, not on winning, and has to do it by themselves as the third party boat sailed a long time ago.

They have to find a way to create a symbiotic ecosystem for their portable and home console that benefits the users of both one of the systems or both. One way is creating them with the same architecture so games can be developed for both devices at the same time (but different graphical settings, ofc), with 1 unified account system that allows digital games (eShop, VC) bought on the home console to be played on the handheld and viceversa whenever horsepower or the use of special features aren't in the way and/or even allowing the handheld to be used as a gamepad for the homeconsole.

Invest in creating more studios as well as making their existing ones bigger. Since they can't count on 3rd parties, they will need to create more games to avoid large droughts of games. Also, they should continue to pursue their partnership with other studios (Platinum, Namco, SEGA, etc) to develop more exclusive games. Trying to include some western studios to that plan wouldn't be a bad idea (am I the only one thinking that Insomniac would be a good studio to try that for Nintendo?).

Finally, avoid selling its products at a loss while maintaining a low price model. Nintendo won't need PS5/X2 levels of power for their next home console (although it would be nice), but WiiU level for the handheld and PS4/X1 level for the home console will be doable for 180/250 Euro/USD with a profit by the time they are launched.

Nintendo, Sony and MS's fault of course. Sony had something special with PS1 and eventually lost a large amount of that fanbase to MS. At this point Nintendos only real chance to gain headway with that group would be to fold as a company, change its name and launch a new upstart console. They wont have to release games better than MS/Sony just similar. A good chunk of the core gamer doesnt want to associate with Nintendo cause it makes them look uncool. IMO the vast majority of Nintendo fanboys already bought a U while the majority of current PS4/X1 sales are by fanboys. PS4/X1 will continue to roll on selling greatly more than the U, the first year sales dont lie. I dont think power, price, or games(obviously you need games) make as much a difference in sales as do public perception.

OR maybe Sony just has a bigger prescence WORLDWIDE. moreso than Ninty and def MS. SOny sells in countries that Ninty doesnt I know in Europe Ninty was never big. Hell i just came from there and you would swear Nintendo and MS doesnt exist.

OR maybe the other two earned their loyalties by constantly having game releases on their systems. Sony supports their home consoles for years much longer than Ninty ever did and MS seems to be following suit. Fact its when you buy a Sony or MS system people know the games are coming. That hasnt been said about a Ninty home console since SNES Gamecube. Even the Wii missed a LOT of stuff or got way worse versions. So IMHO they dont earn any pity because they chose not to take measures the other two did to gain bigger fanbases

Fixed that for you. N64 had a pretty big library with games that looked and ran better than PS1. GC had a pretty big library with games that looked and ran better than PS2. People didnt buy the GC cause at that point the public perception had already started moving away from their systems as the place to play a vast array of games. The Wii was made cause Ninty knew that even if they had 2x the power of PS3 it would still sell poorly because of public perception.

The other two did gain loyalty(which can be pretty stupid depening on how far people take it) because of their 1st/2nd part efforts and 3rd parties invested in them. 3rd parties actively worked on growing the MS Sony userbase just as they are doing today. They fill in the gaps left by 1st party studios. If you stuck to just Sony or MS releases you would have consoles in the same position as the U. 3rd parties didn't even try with the Wii(despite having the majority of the install base for some time) and only used it as a way to sell shit to the masses to help pay for their failing PS3/X360 ventures. 3rd parties have taken the throw shit at the wall approach to Nintendo while MS/Sony get their best efforts(be it in making games or hype/marketing). The idea of Sony supporting their systems for long times is pretty much a myth as well. On PS1 they published around 10 games in the US since the release of the PS2, most of those games being yearly sports rehashes. The other 95% was filled by 3rd parties. On the PS2 they released about 30 games since the PS3 released, around 20 of them Singstar and the other 10 sports/3-4 PSP ports(they seemed to also release 2 India exclusive games/movie tie ins, which I would like to see in action). Sonys support is a myth, 3rd parties are the ones keeping the "10 year cycle" going.

The gaming fanbase left Nintendo long before Nintendo left them and now they have pretty much parked themselves in a spot I dont see changing, mostly due to public perception and in part due to 3rd parties. Nintendo definetly has fault in here but it was something that was not nearly as much in their control as people paint it.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

I wouldnt call N64 library big by any stretch of the imagination. Fact is the PS1 had WAY more games. Important games like your Final Fantasys, etc. Sure the games did look and run better, in some regards. BUt they lacked better sound quality and no FMV. And the games that were multiplat were usually late ports. Mega Man, Resident Evil, Fighting Force. I imagined thats why it got its ass kicked the way it did. I think Wii was made because they couldnt beat Sony or MS at the traditional game. We know they cant.

Stupid in what way? I havent heard anyone murder in the name of Sony or MS. As for SOny support its not a myth. Thats still more than Ninty or MS have done in the past years. And eitehr way so what? Does it matter if 3rd parties fill the gaps? thats whay they are supposed to do. YOu think the general pop is going to make a distinction between 1st 2nd or 3rd party? No? All they see is games still coming to PS3 and Xbox and none coming to Wii despite them coming out around the same time. its not that SOny keeps supporting nobody cares about who supports what, all they care about is that it IS getting support. Doesnt matter who is keeping the cycle going, all that does is help SOny's image. 3rd parties put games on WIi that they thought would sell and guess what? they did. this whole 3rd parties didnt support WIi is a myth. Wii got plenty games, just because they weren the games you wanted, you cant discount them, plenty of people wanted and bought those shit games. Sony and MS got there best efforts because they had the bette hardware. its really that simple. No one told Ninty to release an overclocked GC, what were 3rd parties supposed to put on the system? There are alot of games that could NOT run on Wii period. Hell even COD kind of struggled and that doesnt even come close to pushing the limits of PS3 or 360.

The gaming fanbase left Nintendo because their system wasnt getting the games the wanted to play, it was really that simple. They had control, they had control when they decided to stick to expensive cartridges even though everyone said not to, they made there bed now they have to sleep in it. My point is that Sony and to a lesser extent took measures to ensure that there system would be supported. I honestly cant say the same for Nintendo, hence why we have seen such differences in console sales.
