Fixed that for you. N64 had a pretty big library with games that looked and ran better than PS1. GC had a pretty big library with games that looked and ran better than PS2. People didnt buy the GC cause at that point the public perception had already started moving away from their systems as the place to play a vast array of games. The Wii was made cause Ninty knew that even if they had 2x the power of PS3 it would still sell poorly because of public perception. The other two did gain loyalty(which can be pretty stupid depening on how far people take it) because of their 1st/2nd part efforts and 3rd parties invested in them. 3rd parties actively worked on growing the MS Sony userbase just as they are doing today. They fill in the gaps left by 1st party studios. If you stuck to just Sony or MS releases you would have consoles in the same position as the U. 3rd parties didn't even try with the Wii(despite having the majority of the install base for some time) and only used it as a way to sell shit to the masses to help pay for their failing PS3/X360 ventures. 3rd parties have taken the throw shit at the wall approach to Nintendo while MS/Sony get their best efforts(be it in making games or hype/marketing). The idea of Sony supporting their systems for long times is pretty much a myth as well. On PS1 they published around 10 games in the US since the release of the PS2, most of those games being yearly sports rehashes. The other 95% was filled by 3rd parties. On the PS2 they released about 30 games since the PS3 released, around 20 of them Singstar and the other 10 sports/3-4 PSP ports(they seemed to also release 2 India exclusive games/movie tie ins, which I would like to see in action). Sonys support is a myth, 3rd parties are the ones keeping the "10 year cycle" going. The gaming fanbase left Nintendo long before Nintendo left them and now they have pretty much parked themselves in a spot I dont see changing, mostly due to public perception and in part due to 3rd parties. Nintendo definetly has fault in here but it was something that was not nearly as much in their control as people paint it. |
I wouldnt call N64 library big by any stretch of the imagination. Fact is the PS1 had WAY more games. Important games like your Final Fantasys, etc. Sure the games did look and run better, in some regards. BUt they lacked better sound quality and no FMV. And the games that were multiplat were usually late ports. Mega Man, Resident Evil, Fighting Force. I imagined thats why it got its ass kicked the way it did. I think Wii was made because they couldnt beat Sony or MS at the traditional game. We know they cant.
Stupid in what way? I havent heard anyone murder in the name of Sony or MS. As for SOny support its not a myth. Thats still more than Ninty or MS have done in the past years. And eitehr way so what? Does it matter if 3rd parties fill the gaps? thats whay they are supposed to do. YOu think the general pop is going to make a distinction between 1st 2nd or 3rd party? No? All they see is games still coming to PS3 and Xbox and none coming to Wii despite them coming out around the same time. its not that SOny keeps supporting nobody cares about who supports what, all they care about is that it IS getting support. Doesnt matter who is keeping the cycle going, all that does is help SOny's image. 3rd parties put games on WIi that they thought would sell and guess what? they did. this whole 3rd parties didnt support WIi is a myth. Wii got plenty games, just because they weren the games you wanted, you cant discount them, plenty of people wanted and bought those shit games. Sony and MS got there best efforts because they had the bette hardware. its really that simple. No one told Ninty to release an overclocked GC, what were 3rd parties supposed to put on the system? There are alot of games that could NOT run on Wii period. Hell even COD kind of struggled and that doesnt even come close to pushing the limits of PS3 or 360.
The gaming fanbase left Nintendo because their system wasnt getting the games the wanted to play, it was really that simple. They had control, they had control when they decided to stick to expensive cartridges even though everyone said not to, they made there bed now they have to sleep in it. My point is that Sony and to a lesser extent took measures to ensure that there system would be supported. I honestly cant say the same for Nintendo, hence why we have seen such differences in console sales.
