Forums - Gaming - Why is Nintendo getting praised for disc locked content?

One amiibo will work on many games, this whole thing doesn't seem like a real comparison at all. It's not the same thing in one bit. Amino may not be that exciting or needed at all, but it's hardly the same thing as having locked content and blocked dlc....

Yeah, and it is certainly not like Day one DLC of clearly importent features / characters of the game (like Javik from Mass Effect 3)

I think you missed the whole point of amiibo.

I hope my kids don't see any info on this Amiibo stuff.... I would be so broke.

Not disk locked content.
Its added content through accessories.

And Skylanders does pretty fucking well so i dont see why Amiibo wont.
Amiibo will work across multiple games, and eventually for Wiiu and 3DS, its gonna be a huge hit.

Current Game Machines: 3DS, Wii U, PC.

Currently Playing: X-Com(PC), Smash Bros(WiiU), Banner Saga(PC), Guild Wars 2(PC), Project X Zone(3DS), Luigis Mansion 2(3DS), DayZ(PC)

Nintendo's idea for them was dumb, because now they need shoehorn every character into every game or else many of the amiibo figures will be near worthless compared to others.

Take Mario, use him in SSB, MK and probably 20 games by generations end at least, may even patch features in NSMBU or 3D World.
Then look at Samus...SSB...and if you're lucky 1 Metroid game before this gen is over.

Makes a Mario Amiibo much more valuble than a Samus. Only way to fix this is by shoehorning in more characters into more games.

I also assume that there are probably plans for a "skylanders" type game in the future too.  One where you can add your Amiibo and go explore a world or platform or whatever.

In the meantime, the games that seem to feature the Amiibo support are ones where they can add the skin to characters (I assume guys like Samus or Link can be played in mario Kart 8, Mario Party, etc by just having their skin added on top of a middle or heavyweight racer.)

Most interesting critique I saw so far on the Amiibo concept. And I also have thought about that, that not all amiibos will be featured in all games. Or will they. We will have to see, as Nintendo releases a second and third game with amiibo support.

Haha, you think Nintendo will use this for more than a half dozen games!

These features all seem completely useless to me. Would have been smarter for Nintendo to just make a full fledged game incorporating NFC tech. I'll still probably buy some of the figures for decoration rather than game use.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

It's pretty different than something like Skylanders or Capcom's bullshit because they're not locking characters out of games (yet). That they're planned to work across different games also makes it more additive - these are/will be features that they wouldn't bother with if not for Amiibo. So while it doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, it doesn't exactly seem egregious, either. Just gimmicky.

Besides, at least you get a nice looking figurine for your money rather than a digital key to access content that was already there!
