(Wii) If motion controls would even exist?
XaviX Port, Wii sports console 2 years before the Wii. One of many motion controllers before the Wii.
Nintendo combined motion controls with Apple style marketing and look and got a hit.

Most game changing, probably the ps1. Going with cheap cds instead of expensive to produce cartridges made console gaming a lot more affordable, and also more profitable for 3rd parties.

The PS1 wasn't even close to be the first CD based conole :P. So its just like the Wii.

The original PlayStation was the biggest game changer. It took Sony from zero to crushing the incumbent Sega & Nintendo.

Then credit must be given to Xbox 360 for changing online gaming, and WiiDS for the casual gaming fad of the 0-ties.

PS1.

Games were no longer just for kids and manchildren anymore.

“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” --- C.S. Lewis

Here is another quote- "When a man who writes chidrens books but wants to sell them to adults tries to criticise adults who want something more appropiate for their age to read, use some commom fucking sense because the guy clearly has an agenda".

Try wearing a nappy and shitting yourself all your life.  That quote will not change what people think of you.

This is the real world where fancy quotes mean don't mean dick.

I was using it as a decriptive term anyway.

Ok Kylie, this the internet no the real world lol :P. I really respect you what you wrote here is just really ingore and quite stupid. My dad got me into gaming in 1980's and he wasn't a manchild. He played and still plays probably more sports then anyone on its website and probably works more hours at 58. Plenty of fully fucntional adults played games back before the PS1.

Hmm yes, the first succesful one anyway. It killed off cartridges, Wii didn't replace the regular controler.

I was talking about widespread public perception and acceptance.  When Nintendo dominated in the 80s and early 90s games were mainly seen as something for kids and manchildren, it is even how Nintendo marketed the NES, a kids toy.

When PS1 released it became something for people of all ages, had adult targeted marketing, adult only games (that weren't just MK style violence because of violence, but actual adult themes).  It become socially acceptable for an adult to enjoy playing video games.

In the late 70's and early 80's video games were definitely an adult thing. My dad threw a party in 1980 and had people come over to enjoy a text adventure together.  My aunt bought a Magnavox Odyssey 2 before that. My first games were leisure suit larry and police quest on my dad's pc.
I guess Nintendo created the 'gaming is for kids' perception. PS1 disn't solve that either. It targeted young adults as well, but not people like my dad. He's still a pc gamer. (Although nothing new since it all went digital. He's one of those people that read the entire license agreement, then clicks disagree, and that was it for Steam)

I'd say PS1 considering it marked the beginning of the modern era for gaming to many people.

This is not subject to debate.

Purely in terms of games, the SNES set the all-time record

Purely in term of hardware, the Nintendo 64 was the most revolutionary.

Purely in terms of controller, well the Wii did something cool with the Wiimote

Ok now that you explained it better I agree with one caveat. There were games like Night Trap on Sega CD that had adult themes and other games too like that. Well it was around the same time so it wasn't just Sony is what I'm saying.

Failed adults.

I guess my father, my grandfather and my uncle were failed adults at the time!
