I was talking about widespread public perception and acceptance.  When Nintendo dominated in the 80s and early 90s games were mainly seen as something for kids and manchildren, it is even how Nintendo marketed the NES, a kids toy.

When PS1 released it became something for people of all ages, had adult targeted marketing, adult only games (that weren't just MK style violence because of violence, but actual adult themes).  It become socially acceptable for an adult to enjoy playing video games.

Ok now that you explained it better I agree with one caveat. There were games like Night Trap on Sega CD that had adult themes and other games too like that. Well it was around the same time so it wasn't just Sony is what I'm saying.
