I was talking about widespread public perception and acceptance. When Nintendo dominated in the 80s and early 90s games were mainly seen as something for kids and manchildren, it is even how Nintendo marketed the NES, a kids toy.
When PS1 released it became something for people of all ages, had adult targeted marketing, adult only games (that weren't just MK style violence because of violence, but actual adult themes). It become socially acceptable for an adult to enjoy playing video games.

In the late 70's and early 80's video games were definitely an adult thing. My dad threw a party in 1980 and had people come over to enjoy a text adventure together. My aunt bought a Magnavox Odyssey 2 before that. My first games were leisure suit larry and police quest on my dad's pc.
I guess Nintendo created the 'gaming is for kids' perception. PS1 disn't solve that either. It targeted young adults as well, but not people like my dad. He's still a pc gamer. (Although nothing new since it all went digital. He's one of those people that read the entire license agreement, then clicks disagree, and that was it for Steam)
