Well, I don't find them to be a steal personally, but oh well, maybe they aren't the worst. 5 bucks for NES titles on the other hand? Meh...

Even as a video game old timer, I fucking LOVED the Wii.
But boy did I still have issues with it, and Nintendo way of utilizing it. And here's some of my griefs:
- Didn't act as a online hotspot for the DS. Seriously, how hard could that have been.
- Motion Plus was managed so poorly for a device with so much potential. Boo.
- Lower bar for WiiWare sales before payout for developers. For a platformed that proved so relatively unpopular, it was absolutely insane to keep such limits in place.
- Quality control on 3rd parties went down the shitter.
- The Nintendo Selects line remains a complete joke. Doesn't manage to bring the best sellers out to a bigger audience, and doesn't manage to bring the best reviewed games back from the dead either.
- The online store was and remains terrible. Hard to navigate, tiny screenshots, unattractive pricing.
- The potential of "channels" completely neglected as a way to keep casuals interested in using the system.
- The potential of the message board and online infra structure completely neglected.
- Spare Wii Remotes and Nunchucks both sold at laughable overprices.
- Complete inability to explain to people how the "sensor bar" actually functioned. Most still don't know.

Even worse, after making the switch to HD, I could not play Zelda II on VC anymore - Nintendo just didnt care to male their products HD ready.

The game was designed as an item based party game where the luckiest player wins most of the time. I can see why Nintendo would want to do that given the wide appeal of the Wii, but the game wasn't for me. - Metroid Prime 3 lacked the immersion of previous titles as focus was shifted towards a bland story. And what was intended as immersive motion controls ended up giving the opposite result as the responsiveness was seriously lacking. - Skyward Sword featured little exploration, frequent revisits of previously visited areas, awkward sword duels and few interesting dungeons. (As for the whole Groose thing, I seem to have repressed most of it at this point.) - F-Zero was absent. (Which may be explained by them limiting the areas of potential progress with the hardware. And considering the near-perfection of F-Zero GX (only non-essential parts were lacking), the game would most likely pale in comparison as a result.)
As far as my interests are concerned the Mario platformers, Virtual Console and full Gamecube backwards compatibility was all that the system had going for it. At least the hardware was priced accordingly. |
this is how i felt about Mario Kart, I would forgive Brawl's problems if the online wasnt so goddamn terrible

I liked the user interface and many of the Nintendo games but was disappointed by the performance level. Many of the games were not just weak compared to the 360 and PS3 but weak compared to the original xbox. There was an ambition to original xbox games no doubt thanks to its 64MB of memory, PC architecture and built in hard drive that you didn't get on wii. I spent the first few years of wii ownership playing more gamecube games than wii games. That's not true now but for a long time it was. The gamecube had decent not great third party support where as for wii most third party stuff was often casual or quite terrible compared tot he 360 and PS3 versions of the same games. In the end the wii was something that enabled Nintendo to stay in the console race. A huge success for them but not so much for actual owners. I think the apathy of people to the wii u may be partly due to the legacy of wii. It's clear the motion controller was a huge success and the experience of playing games using that is something the wii bought fresh to gaming. It's a shame the console itself was so horribly compromised and uncompetitive in performance. So my big issue with the wii is the performance level and same criticism can be labelled at wii u. In fact you wonder if Nintendo ever bought out a powerful console would consumers believe it was powerful such is their reputation nowadays for weak hardware. |
im glad im not the only one who thinks this.
To be perfectly honest, it was the fact that they severely under-powered the console. Now I wasn't expecting ps3 like graphics, but, I knew it was going suffer as soon as people were to notice the 480p res was going to be really stretched. Mind you they manged to make SMG/SSBB/MP3 look really good with its hardware, but a better bump in power would've really made them shine.
No to mention Mario Kart Wii (specifically) suffered the greatest since in my eyes it didn't look that good, even in 480p. Which was why it was given a boost in its bloom lighting; which btw was kinda distracting. Had they given it at least a slight bump in graphics as well as HD, it could've possibly gotten a little better support and games like Super Mario Galaxy could/would have look even more beautiful to justify a purchase (more sales).

A great console.
The number of quality games seems to be often underrated by people who only bought it for Mario, Zelda and wii sports.
My Issue's with the Wii are:-
Motion Control:
Motion control has it's place, and sometimes I love it, but they should have packaged a regular controller along side the wii mote as standard for games that are best without motion control.
Lack of HD:
My biggest issue is resolution. After HD tv's became the norm Wii games started to look really bad. Maybe I could forgive the resolution if it could handle decent AA on all games.
Lack of big name games towards the end of the systems life:
In 2010 and 2011 wii gaming were largely about a selective collection of quality niche games (I don't play the shovelware). You could still have good times on the system, and you were missing out if you were one of those who let it collect dust, but all the big name games were elsewhere.
To many the system was dead by then. And unfortunately that's an understandable point of view and the slow death of the wii is one of the big reasons the Wii U now suffers.
I can accept a lot of things but my biggest issue with Nintendo wii was that Nintendo of America refused to bring games already developed ( and translated) to it( Gamestop and Xseed had to step up which while I am soooo happy they did, it should have not necessary)
I am a nintendo fan, not a nintendo fanboy
I cannot replace the gamepad if it gets damaged.
Nintendo games prices are not as competitive as other platforms
The hardware does little compared to other consoles.
My biggest gripe is probably with Nintendo's reluctance to embrace the more modern aspects of gaming, let alone be the ones to push it forwards. I suppose that's not limited to the Wii though, it's more a gripe i have with Nintendo themselves.
Talking purely about the Wii it was probably Nintendo's lack of support during the second half of the gen that annoyed me. It was so easy and cheap to make games for the Wii, and their 1st party titles were selling by the bucket loads. I can't think of any good reason why they chose to let it die :/
