Is the news that floods the net from the thousands of media outlets that attend "industry only" too?

I thought the tourney was just open to people at E3?

I intend on purchasing Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash bros for the Wii U so I am one of the people they should be advertising to, to ensure that I make these purchases.

a spectacle that won't be watched by the mass market and thus, is irrelevant for your argument. stop believing this stuff. they will announce their games a susual and the media will cover it as usual.
An E3 conference isn't going to change Nintendo's fate this generation. The 3DS is going to sell about half of the DS, and the Wii U is going to be a GameCube-like failure.
An E3 conference isn't changing either of those things.
They might as well save a few bucks and not have one.
Next year, when they have something legitimately new to show ... probably their next-gen handheld, then they will probably go back to having a stage show.

You are aware that they are still going to be there talking to the press right? All the hands on impressions that we get each year are still going to happen.
The press conference is still happening, just not on stage in a room full of people.

Looks like it'll be open to the public to some extent.

Trust me, you do not need a conference where all you hear is Nintendo getting bashed by the press and trolls online. It's better for you this way. |
Yeah I own a Wii U (no 3DS) I only have Wind Waker HD and New Super Mario World for it (love both) and I intend to buy Mario Kart 8 to play with the GF and I am going to get New Super Mario Bros U. Excited for that!
If Nintendo brings the goods, they will get the attention. If they drop megaton after megaton no one is going to care if they did it on stage or in a streamed video, people will flip their lid either way. If they present just a bunch of awesome and cool stuff, people will pretend that they don't care as usual and nothing will be different.

I concur. The only problem with last year's E3 Direct was that it didn't have enough cool surprises, which are the most effective fuel for the gamer hype machiene.
