Forums - Nintendo - Why does Mario Kart 8 look so much better than SSB for Wii U? Disappointed.

It's most likely due to being 1080p/60fps instead of 720p/60fps. That's an awful lot of extra resources (225% more in-fact),

Common mistake. It's 225% as much pixels, so 125% more.

Percentages aside the jump from 720p to 1080p requires significantly more power from any GPU. Its much worse when you throw any form of post process effects on top.  ask any PC gamer or look up any benchmarks.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

One is 1080p, the other 720p. Smash would have looked much better at 720p due to freed resources. Currently it looks 'fine', not necessarily bad or OMG awesome either.

I keep hearing that Smash is 1080p but I haven't been able to find confirmation from Ninty. I can only find second hand articles that could be making the old mistaking-upscaled-for-native goof, haha.

Its in the screenshots. Unlike Kart, 3D World and Tropical freese every press release has very few aliasing artifacts. And the ones that do have 'tiny' 1080p like pixels. As oppossed to the more obvious ones in tropical freeze for example.

I do find it curious that Nintendo chose to go with 1080p with Smash Bros though, when 720p has been the standard for just about all their other Wii U games. It's strange.

In any case, if this holds true for the final release it will go a long way towards explaining its more modest graphics compared to Mario Kart.

Namco sucks, that's why.

Do we know how much of the development Namco are actually doing? Are they responsible for the graphics?

What else would they be responsible for? Controls, gameplay and soundtracks are well established, that only leaves more required manpower for graphics.

Fair point. Looking back over their catalogue, they don't seem to be a dev associated with high end graphics.

Native 1080p pics below, even with miracle AA a 720p image cannot look that sharp especially on a PC screen. The aliasing on Zelda's dress (2nd shot) screams 1080p. Straight edges of Links sword has zero aliasing, and that's usually a very easy way to notice jaggies.

But I thought we Nintendo fans didn't care about graphics!

still day one for me

Switch!!!

First you say:

[...] the two series were never known for their impressive graphics and art design

So, if those series have always been extremely successful both commercially and critically and they were never really known for impresive graphics, then impresive graphics are not really expected for them and that's fine. They more than make up for it in gameplay excellence.

So then, why are you complaining about SSB's graphics calling them "dissapointing"?

They seem to be, since the Direct showed him off at the Bamco studios. Basically serving Game Arts' role from Brawl, being under "Sora's" supervision, but mostly in a manpower way, not a creative way.

Some of what this shows is the schizophrenic nature of the Smash U shots: these images do look GREAT, well ahead of Brawl and fitting for Wii U's capabilities, others look pretty poor. It's odd. Could just be a work-in-progress thing.

It looks pretty good in my opinion, but there are some low res bottom textures and the audience in the boxing stage is pretty ugly. And I don't like the ape models that much.

Nintendo games get their graphical polish in the last months. That's why they usually look better from trailer to trailer, especially shader effects and lighting.
