Forums - Gaming - What game mechanics do you absolutely hate?

I have died a thousand deaths in co ver shooters/rpgs where the same button controls run and cover. You can't run past anything and end up on the wrong side of cover or in the wrong cover and I die before I can disengage or hop over. I can't believe this can't be fixed. Maybe voice control can be used for maps or inventory access to free up the face buttons and cut down on the use of cumbersome rotating menu wheels as well. Besides free mods the extra buttons for mapping and macro combos looks like the biggest advantage PC has. From where I sit among the great unwashed. I'm no grafix ho obviously.

Even worse are games that blind you with a screen fade or blackout like those arteries and capillaries that crept in from the edge of the screen in ME2 when you got hurt. I appreciate that devs want their game to be difficult but taking away my ability to fight at the worst possible time seems cheap and counterproductive. Instead of a last second escape with your pulse pounding in your ears you're helpless to prevent impreding doom. One of the worst examples of devs taking control away was the TFU Jedi Temple mission where one of the boss' powers was to completely reverse all my aiming and motion controls. Nice. On a fairly small platform too.

Death animations are overused and adding extended ones to Fallout added exactly nothing. I really hate games that let the rest of the mob move while you're stuck in a mini cutscene admiring your handiwork. Not sure why Dead Space or Halo devs thought I'd enjoy 15 seconds of seeing my head get replaced or removed. Builds character I guess. Keeps us humble. Or coders revenge.

Sorry to go on and on. Just one more. The one-hit wonder in all it's forms makes a game more of a rote learning experience as to where the enemy is rather than giving you some kind of chance to fight through the first time. For me this includes bosses/enemies that freeze or knock you down while their inevitable melee minions pound you to a point just short of death. There's nothing more frustrating than finally getting control of my character just to have him fall over backwards, dead. Thanks guys that was lovely to watch. Who's playing this game exactly?

I lied. Please just give me one store in some city that stays open all night and has lots of cash. Travel to Lizardville, wait 13 hours. Travel to Spookytown wait 9 hours. Gahhh, and stop filling barrels/boxes with thousands of almost worthless items. It's not the act of finding something that's enjoyable it's finding decent stuff, equiping better weps and gear and getting rich. Done now.

Thanks for reading! 'Post quick reply' ;p

Youre the one thats confused.

Difficulty can be influenced by game mechanics, but it is not a game mechanic itself and hence whether it is locked or unlocked is irrelevant to the question of which mechanic you absolutely hate.

Nope, seems it didn't help. Oh well, I tried.

Lol, nicely put

I guess their idea is to put a ton of useless loot in the game to make it that more satisfiying when you find something valuable/useful, but I do think some games go overboard.  Especially games where you get into the habit of selecting 'take all' or something similar, and then having to constantly manage inventory or sell 50 items to earn only enough money for a small potion.

I like the old ways of just grouping and going out doing dungeon groups or mob killing for xp or drops.

Quick Time Events easily. I hate them the most when they are a huge part of the damn game! ( * cough* Resident Evil 6 * cough* Lords of Shadow * cough*)

I'm not a big fan of rhythm games. Well, I don't hate them to be exact but it's one kind of a genre I wouldn't play for too long.
