"Oculus Rift-beating VR headset" Doubtful...

because sony is not a technology company that spend millions and millions on R&D and do not have any previous experience with VR, none, nothing, nope.

They are, of course. But they can't do wonders within a certain price range. I followed a lot of twitter accounts around Oculus and there are very talented guys working on the tech behind Oculus with many smart techniques to make people not get headaches or make them puke, for example. Very, very complex math behind all this, leave aside the hardware which is needed for it.

I don't say Sony won't deliver a good VR experience although we have yet to see it. But I think that

a) the hardware of Oculus will be a lot better than Sony's solution just because of the price

b) the experience with Oculus will be a lot better because of the manpower and intelligence put into the project

b) is of course just a guess from me - we will see how it will turn out.

these are just assumptions. there is no reason at all to think that Sony cant make a better VR headset. is there a possibility that its worse, of course, a big one too. but their is also a big possibility thats its pretty much equal to it or even better.

What is your opinion based off? Just that it is Sony we are talking about? No offense but the days were Sony tech was generally ahead of the competition are over for quite a time. And Oculus is rumored to be at about $500, no way Sony will sell an add-on at this price so hardware-wise Sony's solution will definitely be inferior to Oculus.

I don't care if it's niche or not. I want dat thing NAUW!

About Oculus Rift: Who cares, the bloody thing won't be available for the consumers for some years anyway. Even if Sonys Headset is techically inferior (which I doubt, honestly) they have the infrastructure and logistics to pump that sucker out way before Oculus.

The Rift is conceptualized as a pretty affordable piece of new tech at initially $300, maybe now trending more towards $400 for the consumer version. While this is a good price point for Sony to gun for aswell i think there also is the option for them to go with a $500-600 pricepoint but either beating the Rift to the market with very similar specs or being a higher priced, but higher quality alternative (higher res screen etc.) for the even more enthusiastic VR fan.

Either way I hope Sony made sure they are compatible with the foundation Oculus laid out with the Rift dev kit 1, so that we don't have a situation with several different standards.

I don't doubt that the Oculus guys are very smart, but I don't think they have an inherent advantage over Sony's R&D there.

and usually those corporation are multi billion dollar corporations. Sony has a long long history in imaging, 3d, and other tons of forms of technology. how much does oculus VR have? are you simply saying sony cant make a good product because Samsung or Apple had the upper hand lately?

Maybe Sony is bringing different versions of it's VR headset. Like one low budget for the mass market (like 100 - 200 $), one thing equal to Oculus and one friggin' high end bastard for 1000 $ or something. Ever thought about that?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. It's pretty exciting though.

My personal thoughts on VR is that it won't be a success until it incorporates a group fun effect. Like arcades, party games, the Wii, and online gaming, video games have the most success when groups of people can enjoy them together. Wearing a headset and playing a game is a singular experience. They need to solve that on the local and online levels to achieve mainstream success. Until they do, it will be a niche market.

This is a mistake... I hope they dont go through with it.

If I am wrong, I will gladly say I was wrong, no problem with this :) I just don't know how much money/time/ressources Sony was and is able to spend for such a project. What is making me doubtful is that it is said that the consoles are not capable enough to handle Oculus which leads me to the conclusion that their tech seems quite demanding for existing hardware which means (to me) there will be a lot of data to be processed.

Again, I am gladly proven wrong in this point

No, of course not. This is just based off what I read about Oculus and all the effort put in this amazing project, especially the guys who work at the project and the experiences I heard about it. And we don't know how much Sony spend in this technology, although of course they are quite a big player.

sony's tech will be better ("OR killing") for the simple fact it's sony and not some hohum little startup with no confirmed developer support.   if sony puts 1 game on the thing it will already be better than OR.  seriously,.. sony, nintendo, and MS are the only three that could possibly pull this off.

"There’s also no pressure on developers from platform holder Sony to adopt the tech; indeed, the studios we spoke to were excited by the technology, but questioned its viability as a platform."

i'm glad they aren't pressuring developers.  that will foster good developer relationships.  i do hope sony gets this in the hands of indies as they are more likely to take the risk to develop something unique for it.  ..but i also question the viability of this.  sony NEEDS to bring their "wii sports" to the reveal.  if this doesn't get amazing press from day 1 it will flop.  sony needs positive word of mouth on their side,.. this will be impossible to advertise their way to customer acceptance.
