Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Gamuurs: Did Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze's 108,000FW American sales make you breath a sigh of relief?

The problem is that did next to nothing for hardware sales. Should have had Retro working on Metroid instead, at least that would have been different enough to convince a few more people to buy a WiiU.

I wouldn't worry so much about the hardware, Nintendo games generally don't move hardware in singular spikes.  Though the hardware usually sees a small bump during major game releases, the reality is that Nintendo sells systems off its first party library, rather than big hitter single titles.  The hardware, therefore, will continue to see gradual increases week-on-week or month-on-month as Nintendo's major releases continue to pile up.

The sales are currently disproving your theory. The WiiU had an abysmal January 2013, but it's gotten plenty of big first party releases since then with Pikmin 3, 3D World, and Wind Waker HD. Yet even with a bigger lineup and cheaper price it was actually down YOY in January. Still selling worse than it did last year.  If Donkey Kong isn't moving units now it's not going to do so next week or next month. The hardware is not going to see gradual increases every week, that doesn't make any sense. Mario Kart and Smash Bros are the only ones that will sell systems, and Mario Kart is 3 months away.

Donkey Kong Country Returns:6.11M

Metroid Prime1-2-3:5.92M combined

I was talking about hardware sales, not software. Donkey Kong might sell more units but a new Metroid would have attracted the core gaming audience that the WiiU desperately needs. People have enough colorful platformers on WiiU.

Country Returns on Wii sold 470k FW in the U.S. Seems like even a lot of Nintendo's "core" audience are passing on Wii-U.

The Wii install base then was significantly higher than the Wii U's current install base.

Sales prediction, PS4: 122 Million, Xbox one: 50 million, Switch: 105 million.

How can people say it's just another platform game on a system full of platfomers, surely if your a platform gamer this is the game you want, no other platformer on the system comes close to DK in terms of difficulty and challenge, also this doesn't take into account digital sales, it's number 1 on the e-shop.

i meant no offense,  just said platfom gamers probably bought the console already.

Those sales aren't bad, but that's just because the Wii U itself doesn't sell.

The Wii U has a quite good attach rate for a console less than 2 years old. About 5 games per console, in comparison SNES which lasted 6 years ended up with an attach rate of around 7.7 games per console. No console has managed to sell +10 games per console.

I see too much hysteria in this thread.

Less than 10% of the Wii owners got Galaxy 2, less than 1/3 of the Gamecube owners bought Mario Sunshine, less than 10% of the Super Nintendo owners bought Zelda A Link to the Past, less than 1/4 of the N64 owners bought Ocarina of Time.

Also consider we only have data for 2 days and its clear people are jumping the gun. They obviously didnt learn from Super Mario 3D World. Everybody was saying the game flopped because it didnt have a huge first week, well 3 months later and its approaching 2 million with no signs of slowing down. Assuming that Vgchartz number is correct it should be 300k WW in February and will have legs, 2-3 million lifetime isnt out of the question.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

240k WW FW isn't to bad imo, especially compared to Mario 3D World that a) Is part of a much bigger series and b) released in November.

I think its pretty respectable even when compared to DK on Wii which released Nov/Dec on a much bigger install base.

What is AWFUL though and cannot be ignored is the almost complete lack of HW boost. The re-release on 3DS made a bigger impact on HW as did the original on Wii. When you take into account how low the Wii U sales are a % bump should have been easier to obtain.

I expected a decent bump in hardware especially in America but like others have said there is already New Super Mario Bros U, New Super Luigi U, Rayman Legends, Sonic Lost World, and Super Mario 3D World on Wii U, so it makes sense why a 6th platformer in a span of 15 minths didnt boost hardware.
