For the console, yes, but when you factor in buying a newly released game like a DK or a Mario Kart, that's another $50-$60. Granted, you're also getting Mario and Luigi in the deal as well but when you compare the situation to past Nintendo consoles it's quite expensive: Gamecube (at this point in its life): $150 + $50 for a new game. That's a total of $200 for a new consumer to take the plunge on a Nintendo console enticed by a new game they were awaiting. With WiiU, you're now paying $300 + $50-$60 for a new game. So a new consumer is currently having to pay a minimum of $350 in the same scenario. Nintendo has never been in this position before and I believe that's the main deterrent regarding WiiU. At the very least they need to bundle Mario Kart 8 for $299 but truthfully a "$249/w MK8 bundle" is really what they need to deliver much more desirable results. |
You failed to account for over ten years of inflation. If you had, you would see the price gap between the two is a lot less.

What I want to know is what the hell the over 2 million Wii U users that didn't buy DK:TF are doing with their Wii Us? It should have had 300k first week at the very least. It makes no sense. Seriously, who are these people that bought Wii U? They aren't casual, or they'd be buying games like Wii Party U and Wii Fit U. They're not dudebros or CoD would be selling. They aren't "hardcore" or games like Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Ninja Gaiden, Darksiders, Batman, Deus Ex, and stuff like that would be selling. You'd think they'd be 2D platformer fans from how Mario is selling, but come on, the system hasn't had a good 2D platformer since Rayman, and now DK is hardly selling even though it's a Nintendo 1st party exclusive. It's like not even Nintendo fans bought the Wii U, aside from a handful of them. Unless they're all just really poor. I know I am. I only have 5 games for it, and that includes Nintendo Land, and the system itself was a gift. Maybe all Nintendo fans are broke college students and children that can't buy their own games and it's nowhere near a holiday or their birthday. Still, it really just doesn't add up. |
A good portion are. Many of Wii U's best-selling titles right now are from the bargain bin.
I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Eventually I think they put together another bundle and pack-in an extra 2013 title that has flat-lined in sales.
A WiiU Pro Controller + DKC : TF bundle is possibility.

I will personally kill every Wii U owner who didn't buy the game.
On a serious note, it did ok all things considered, I hope it has good legs. Also, last time I checked it was number 1 on the eshop, which I found pretty surprising considering it's size, but in any case the digital number are probably pretty low regardless, I would be surprised if it sells even 10k digitally.
Nintendo and PC gamer

According to VGC numbers, first weeks and hardware at the time:
Donkey Kong Country Returns Wii: November release; US: 471k - EU: 150k - JP: 169k, Wii at 76.2m
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D: May release; US: 73k - EU: 37k - JP: 102k, 3DS at 31.4m
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze: February release; US: 109k - EU: 50k - JP: 38k, WiiU at 5.8m
Make of this what you will, personally I only see concrete evidence that the Japanese sales are bad, yet the low American and European numbers could very well just be due to install-base and an unfavorable release date which means this game will have legs. Moreover we don't know how it did digitally, though I know we shouldn't count on it making a considerable difference

This is what I said in the summer and all the responses were simply "DK sells more then Metroid"
DK wasnt going to sell hardware to anyone who wasn't already convinced by Mario 3D World and NSMBU.

A majority are children, dont hold it against them. Lol
Hopefully Retro will now start working on metroid for the launch of Nintendo's next system.
