Forums - Sales - Can the Xbone dethrone the PS4 in the USA?

It needs sell over 250k more than PS4 in US in NPD December... it is possible but I think the difference will be way close... so I don't expect.

BTW I think the Xbone chance is December because after that PS4 will start to outsell it in US with more supply.

Since Xb one never had the lead in USA it can't re-take it, it can only take the lead.

I knew someone would bring that up lolz. I meant that in relation to the Xbox's lead over Playstation in the US last gen

I believe it can. Xbox brand is really strong in US, so, with some good marketing it can surpass PS4 sales.

I'm actually surprised for the PS4 demand, I didn't think that it would have been so high.

Why? PS2 sold >53 million in North America. You think all those who went from PS2 to Xbox360 or Wii aren't inclined to go back to PS4? Those people have shown they aren't particularly loyal to a brand, they'll go where they perceive the value to be. That you are surprised just means you don't understand the mindset of the majority of mainstream gamers.

Yes, you're right, but PS4 is selling out incredibly fast. I didn't expect such a comeback of popularity for the Playstation brand.

I agree that the average consumer doesn't have a particular loyalty to a brand, in fact I always said that, at the beginning of last generation, a lot of X360 sales were from people who would have bought a PS3, but for some kind of reasons (price most of all), chose a 360 because it was a good trade off.

it can be real close. I remember Gamestop reported that over 2 million customers are still waiting to pre order ps4

Please stop saying this.  It's really misleading.  The Gamestop rep was misquoted or misinformed and there were never 2.3m pre-orders or even inquiries about pre-orders.  The number included every call they got about both consoles and their 'supplies'.  Whatever that means.  It was obviously an attempt to make GS look good and did the opposite imho.  That said the actual PS4 wait list at my EB was apparently 3X the size of X1's.  Sorry, but anecdotes are all we have at this point.   Here's the ArsTechnica version after corrections.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/11/gamestop-2-3-million-people-still-waiting-for-a-ps4/

OT:  I believe X1 will retake the lead briefly for a week or two.  Lose it as PS4 stock shortages are overcome but take it back later this gen and eventually pull away.  Total U.S. sales LT will be higher for both consoles than 7th gen with less of a gap.  There will never be a Kinectless SKU and M$ will not be dropping the price anytime soon.  They don't need to.

Selling well and making money are not directly related to how much PS4 sells and if they really cared about VGC' sales numbers they would have spent some of the $70B plus they have in cash and short-term investments to discount and market the 360.  Instead they are focused on creating a seamless voice, data and entertainment network for phones, Windows based PCs, 'The One' and various smartglass devices and on short and long-term profit of course.  What they will do is push voice and gesture controls and improve and expand on the X1s capabilities with software updates, upgrades and innovations (I went there) to differentiate their product and justify the price.   Again, JMO.

Well I'd love to stay and chat but I'm off to the south seas to blow up some forts.  Later.

December 2013 could be the Xbone's chance of catching up to the PS4, in the US where supply seems to be a problem in that month as well. However from january onwards i suspect the PS4 will take the lead and never look back.

There will be months where the Xbone will sell more, but LTD in the US belongs to the PS4 this generation.

It looks like after December Xbone can take the lead (most agree XB1 has more supply in Dec). If XBO outsells PS4 by more than ~200k in Dec, XBO will have the lead after the holidays.

Then in spring PS4 should surge ahead again perhaps if they can meet demand.

Then Titanfall in march could be the next gamechanger. But we will see.

I think a lot depends on how fast MS will cut the price to 399. If it's by holiday 2014 they may be ok.

I suppose the fact that PS4 set a biggest launch of all time record could be surprising. But I think there was a certain predictability about it, in hindsight. We have a longer than average generation, we have the most consoles sold in a generation, we have Wii U misfiring, we have MS shooting itself in the foot (though fortunately for them with enough time to spare to perform major surgery on the foot), we have the cheapest ever (inflation adjusted) playstation being launched, we have Sony more or less not putting a foot wrong in the pre-launch period, and importantly the video game industry has created a pretty strong pre-order culture.

All of those factors put together made a record breaking launch for PS4 quite likely. What's quite impressive is that Xb one is selling so well, in the USA, despite the fact that PS4 has broken sales records. But a lot of the factors that lead PS4 to break records also work for Xb one. In fact in the USA, had it not been for 2 things, it would probably be Xb one that broke the sales record.

How come Selnor, Fallen, and Koneiki are the only ones who over see PS4s just sitting on the shelves unsold. Man if they had bought all of those and resold they could have made a few grand on ebay.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut
