Forums - Politics - Elections in germany

Merkel isn't even a real politician, she rarely makes any decisions at all. Her only talent is to insistently sit things out doing nothing. She also strongly benefits from being female. If she was a man she would encounter much more refusal for her passivity and aimlessness.
No responsible person could honestly vote for her but in the end she's gonna make it again, I'm afraid.

I don't expect much to change.

Merkel will still be chancellor, the question is just which party is going to be part of the government.
Either FDP or SPD. Both have rather equal chances in my eyes.

I don't believe in SPD, Grüne & Linke.

I used to be a FDP voter during the last elections, just like many actually, but just as these people I chose to vote for a different party this time.
I'm sure if Kantor was more in touch with German politics, he would do the same.

Many responsible persons vote for her. As I said before doing nothing is often the best option. And it has nothing to do with her being female. It was the same with Kohl, she practically learned it from him.

The FDP align most closely with my views, so the scenario I'm hoping for is a CDU/FDP coalition like we have now, and that's looking precarious with recent poll numbers (especially with the FDP so low). Merkel and the CDU will almost certainly stay in power in some form, possibly with a grand coalition with the SPD. The Pirate Party probably won't even win seats, but it would be interesting to see what they'd do with them if they did.

Of course, Merkel doesn't really stand for anything domestic any more, so I doubt we'd see much of a change in policy there whichever coalition she chooses.

Note that I have obtained pretty much all of my knowledge of German politics from The Economist, so that may well be somewhat biased. And all of this ends up being much like supporting a football team because German politics don't really have any impact on Britain.

This.  Please not the SDP, but I fear they may have influence next parliament.  You better believe the SDP could have an impact on the UK.

It is SPD.

LOL, @ the football-team-comment, but that's mostly like it is for foreign countries.

FDP might be under 5%, that means they will get no seats. If they are above, they are considerably weaker than last time. Many people lost trust in them and mostly credit them all the bad stuff from the past 4 years. A grand coalition indeed is likely. Funny how in the advertisements SPD and CDU are fighting so much against each other and some days they may be in a coalition (again).

What is the bad stuff from the last four years? I only ever really hear good news coming out of Germany: low inflation, low unemployment, a more or less balanced budget. I figured that was why Merkel had surged so much.

Nice to hear some words from outside. And you are right with your points, Germans tend to complain all the time but in general there are way worse places to live.

I hope AFD gets enough votes for reaching 5%. But Merkel will stay chancellor, at least CDU will have the most votes. Piraten won't make it, I think.

You actually can: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Democratic_Party_of_Germany

Hell no, that's just the german intelligence service party. Some estimates  say that at times, over 50% of their leadership was secretly being payed by the "Verfassungsschutz".

When they tried to forbid the party several years ago, they based their argumentation mainly on undemocratic/racist/fascist/whatever statements made by individuals from that party, trying to suggest that these statements prove how undemocratic "the party" thinks etc.. But as it turned out, the majority of these more or less scandalous statements were actually uttered by "V-Leute", people who secretly receive money from german intelligence servicesm for their "work" within the party. In fact, it turned out that it was also exactly those people who wrote many of the party's speeches etc.

I still think the FDP had a good program and they probably have one today.
They are just lacking good politicians

Guido Westerwelle as Foreign Minister is just wrong.
Rainer Brüderle is too old and I can't see any ministry that would be a good fit for him.
Rösler is doing a pretty good job IMO, but that is it.

Other than that, there is nothing else coming up.

If they had someone like Guttenberg, they would be successful.
