wait people actually believe that Nintendo didn't pay for Monster Hunter exclusivity?

How do you explain the game not releasing on PSV as well?

If the game had gone multiplat then yeah sure, that would make business sense from Capcom. But exclusive to a new platform that the game has never been on before? Uhm yeah.

That would be a very odd decision from Capcom.

But then again looking at the numbers this week....with 3DS having a huge % of the market...the decision to go exclusive doesn't look that bad. But still the game would have sold at least a million on the PSV in addition to 3DS sales. That's a lot of lost revenue.

I don't think its possible for anyone to reasonably argue that Nintendo didn't pay for it. It was a good move by Nintendo imo, I don't see why people are trying to make as if that didn't happen.

There is no proof nintendo money hatted Capcom. Yes i believe they did but capcom could of just thought it do better on 3ds and keep it on 1 platform which in this case is the best scenario

Theres almost never any hard proof of these kinda things. Theres no proof (other than Pachter saying hes got info from "good sources") that MS paid Rockstar for making GTA4 multiplat. But nobody doubts this fact. Its not like Rockstar or MS have come out and made this public. And i dont see why they should. Consumers arent interested in this kinda details it will also just anger consumers of competing platforms. No company wants to do that.

@bolded - Doing better on 3DS is not what im arguing though. I agree the game has more potential to do better on 3DS. But its impossible to argue that the game would do better as an exclusive title. Heres where i see it as proof. Because in order for Capcom to maximize profits and revenue, taking MH multiplat would be the obvious thing to do. Its what they have done with all their home console games. Its not like the PSP wasnt popular in Japan...or sales of MH games on PSP wasnt selling. Its risky to switch up platforms and go exclusive with a main entry in a popular franchise. I really doubt this was a decision made by Capcom alone with nothing to persuade them.

But yeah the timing of the development of the game could also be something to think about. But that still doesnt explain exclusivity.

Bolded isn't exactly true.  While total sales could go up by making it on the PS Vita as well, it also costs money to do it unless one system will be getting a straight up port of the other.

Yep porting the game to PSV would cost money. Possibly tens of of millions. However the franchise is a multi million seller and those costs will be easily recovered.

1 problem though at least now, how do we kno it'll be a million seller? i mean yea it could do a mil but can it do alot more? we are talking about attach ratio of over  33%. most of the psp user base probably move to 3ds userbase.

Hats off to psrock. Other than that, as happy as I am for Nintendo and Capcom, I wish the industry was just a bit more balanced. Hopefully that'll come as companies make better choices and better games.

Does it have 3D though

Haven't you heard? 3D is out of fashion

I guess screens, portability and the backtouchpad are out of fashion too. You heard it here folks, Sony officially left the handheld business with Vita TV.

That completely assumes that the 3DS maintains its current numbers and that the Vita version also does 1m+ copies, which I HIGHLY doubt would have happened.  Especially since doing both versions would also take more time as well, which would in turn make it cost even MORE money for BOTH versions.  There's no guarantee that making a PS Vita version would have optimized profits.  It may as well have hindered it, because having both versions the PS Vita version would either have sold 500k or less, or the 3DS version would have decreased sales (which in turn still can account for worse profits for Capcom).  I'm not saying it isn't possible for it to have "optimized" profits, but it's conjecture... and bad one at that.

Impressive MH. Too bad GTA is going to steal its thunder in the WW charts. Vita and WiiU are just abysmal now. Hope the new model(s) do something for Vita.

No it isn't. GTA released after Sunday, so MH4 will have it's spotlight disrupted for one week.

No Monster Hunter game has ever been multiplatform before. I don't remember hearing any of you guys complaining that Monster Hunter 2 should also have been on GameCube/Xbox/Wii/360.

But move the series onto a new handheld, and make it clear before that handheld's competition was released that this would be the new Monster Hunter handheld, and everyone loses their minds.

Was a money hat involved? Personally I doubt it, but I don't think it matters much. It's not as though Sony has never bought exclusivity before, and if Nintendo did buy exclusivity from Capcom, then that was surprisingly business savvy of them. But I think Nintendo may have just said, "Our handheld will have a larger install base, be more affordable for buyers, be less expensive to develop for... and we'll give you a couple Nintendo-themed costumes for good measure," and Capcom never looked back.

Do you really think that the Vita is so enticing as a platform for major publishers that Nintendo has to cut them a check to keep them away from it? I suppose Nintendo also wrote a check to Namco to ensure that Wayforward's Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon also didn't come to Vita, and to Warner Bros to make sure the Vita got the 2D handheld Arkham Origins and not the full 3D game the consoles are getting. Maybe Nintendo paid nStigate to sabotage their COD Vita game, or maybe they paid Activision to ensure that no future COD games would be made for the system.

Seriously, every time Nintendo doesn't get a third-party game, it's because they have a "bad relationship" with the publisher, or their console is too underpowered to run it. But then when Nintendo obviously does have a good relationship with a publisher they've been working closely with for over a decade, that can't possibly be the reason they get exclusives, no, they must be paying the publisher large sums of money while twirling their mustaches and adjusting their monocles. Or am I to believe that Sony also doesn't have a good relationship with publishers, and simply throws money at them for every game on PlayStation platforms?

Jesus bloody hell 3DS!

Well, this certainly revitalized a lot of interest in this thread that I haven't seen for months. If only for that reason alone, I'm very pleased with what MH has done this week. I was fully expecting it; but it's still might impressive.

But damn, it's boring. I suppose the fans bickering has made this week slightly more interesting, but outside of MonHun & 3DS hardware there is literally nothing to discuss. Everything else is doing horribly. Absolutely abysmal for Vita (at least, this week, we can use the excuse of "this was after the new model announcement"; but even then 6k is shocking). Wii-U is back below PSP level which is just... yeah.

And software has nothing fun. I suppose a week where a Killzone that debuted at ~ 11k stays in the top 20 for a second week really has nothing going on.

I prefer weeks where there's a surprise. A small title exceeding expectations. A big title under-performing. Phantom hardware boosts. Ah well, we'll be back to it soon. Looking forward to seeing if we hear about MonHun digital sales (plus second week sales).
