Expecting a 2014 western release away from big hitters since MH isn't that big in the west.
Curious to see how this does in the west, very good start in Japan.

Dev costs for handheld games have never really been very high. It would be relatively easy to recover those costs. It wouldnt even need to sell millions really or even a million. @bolded if you feel going multiplat was more likely going to hurt sales then we have a fundamental difference in opinion. I base my opinion on how games sell on home consoles and just in general. More platforms means more sales ( i cant think of a case where this wasnt the truth). And i think MH is a pretty strong franchise in Japan that can easily sell millions on both the 3DS and PSV. Please, dont mistake me for some disgruntled PSV fanboy. I dont own the system and probably never will. But to suggest that the best option for Capcom was to go with 3DS exclusivity to maximise profits, revenue and brand growth...? Especially when they have an established fan base on the competeting console's predecesor. I think thats plain wrong. But anyways il leave it at that. I was just surprised by the amount of people arguing against Ryuzaaki (hes point about the game being paid for by Nintendo, not the part about it being inferior etc.). |
I think you misunderstand. I don't think multiplat will hurt sales. I think that it doesn't guarantee more profits due to higher costs for not just development, but advertisement as well. There's really nothing saying that the increased number of buyers for it being multiplat would be all that large in any way. The most likely situation is that between the PS V and 3DS (if it were on both release date) would be only about 100k units more. I'm not saying the PS V version would get 100k sales, but that the chances are that the 3DS version would have less and the PS V version would only bring in probably 100k new users in that first week. That is not maximizing profits. That's taking a risk and also taking the risk of releasing it in 2014 rather than 2013.
Also, I didn't say anything about brand growth.

Tehe, I was waiting for that one too :P
Of course it's a valid point, and it's not the same as brand new multi-plat release. But still, it's a change from the Monster Hunter methods of old. Previously we'd have old games ported either to a solo platform (i.e. Freedom Unite) or to a pair of platforms under one company's umbrella (i.e. Tri Ultimate). This is the first time we're seeing a port, almost simultaneous (albeit delayed by a couple of weeks on Wii-U) to different consoles by different manufacturers.
It certainly appears like shift in the thinking.

If you want to get technical, both Monster Hunter Portable 1 and 2 were ports of the PS2 games and MHP3rd got a PS3 port.
Monster Hunter is Capcom's whore and will appear on every platform in some way.
That's crazy for Monster Hunter 4! I wonder what the 2nd week sales will be.
Pretty crazy number but there is still another million selling franchise yet to release on 3DS so take a look at the charts next month

MS was huge on PSP and we already have a few games selling quite well on PSV in Japan...common sense says the game will sell very well on PSV (maybe not milions but definitely over a million). I also doubt that porting the 3DS vesion of the game or developing both versions at the same time will be overly costly. These are handhelds at the end of the day...not homes consoles with overly complicated architectures. |
Obviously the MH-Fans has no brand loyalty to a handheld manufacturer. They bought the 3DS now as they once bought the PSP. A Vita version would not generate much more sales in addition, and would probably have a hard time to yield the port costs.
It was probably even easier for them to buy the 3DS now than the PSP back then, because the 3DS is obviously THE gaming device in Japan that gets all the games.

I don't understand this mindset at all. MH4 doesn't have a Vita version because of the agreement between Nintendo and Capcom. It's mutually beneficial.
Whatever profit (don't kid yourself thinking they would lose money on a Vita port) they get isn't near as lucrative as the agreement they were able to get.
