Yeah a class action lawsuit the got dismissed, happens all the time, doesn't really mean anything.

Well, was there even an Xbox 360 lawsuit?  I mean, whether there was or wasn't, does it not "really mean anything"?  We can all agree there was a very real problem, right?

There were growing concerns that retailers were going to stop selling 360's due to sheer number of consumer complains and growing media pressure, and then leaked documents showed MS shipped the console even after theri OWN engineers warned them about the issues. Then whispers of a lawsuit started and MS had no choice but to admit they had a big problem.

Not remotely the same.

Okay.  All I know is somebody said that the PS2 wasn't deffective or there would have been a lawsuit.  There was one and Sony settled.  My work here is done.

Well Sony invested heavily in the PS Move, according to some people here even before the launch of the Wii. Yet they did not make it the "standard bundle" and it sold like... well ... it did not sell at all.

So as long as bundles guarantee the software support, I am fine with it. MS has enough problems with the X1 already, they don't need a PS Move-like debacle.

15 million is not selling at all?

Is this what happens when you become loyal to a company? Just say extremely inept things? Lol, no thank you. I prefer to live in reality.

You're a bit quick to start dismissing people as delusional fanboys. Wasn't there not a ton of PR twist behind that number?  Because there are 3 components- ps eye (available from 2007), move controller and the navigator, what does that number account for. Also most people would have bought 2 move controllers seeing as its core titles were multiplayer games, so  already that number is looking less impressive.

A good indicator of how a peripheral sells is  through looking at the sales of the most heavily bundled and marketed software.

Not sure if serious.

The dude said the move did not sell "at all." And you're telling me that I'm in the wrong for explaining why that type of comment is utter shit? Wow...

Futhermore, take the heaviest bundled PS3 game and it doesn't exceed 12% of total units so I have no idea why you think bringing that up means anything at all. Pretending to know something you don't is not conducive to an unbiased analysis.

I'm sure there was plenty of PR in that number, so cut it in half for all I care. Is 7.5 million units "not selling at all?"

I think you understand where I'm going with this. If you don't, you are beyond help.

Dude, did no one hug you as a child? You're in the wrong for responding in such a brash, insulting mannor; dismissing him as some deluded fanboy. The popular consensus is that the Move didn't sell a lot. If what you mean to say is that the move isn't the failure people make it out to be, I'd agree (look at my post, i never agreed with him) but its understandable why someone might assume it to be a failure because much of the software failed and even those decent numbers you presented are obviously misleading. If we agree the 15m is most probably twisted somehwat, I brought up the software sales of the most bundled game becuase that is usaually a strong indication of where the truth lays.

Anyway the main point of his arguement was that bundled peripherals garuntee better support. And he's of course right, lets not get caught up in a regressive MS vs Sony thing.

If you want me to respond kindly then don't make patently absurd statements as he did.

If he had said the Move didn't sell as well as Sony planned and as a result of this considered it a failure, I would have taken no issue at all. That's not what he said. He went full-out partisan and attempted to mitigate the success (limited) of the move, pretending its sales were essentially meaningless.

It's not a MS vs Sony thing, it's a reality vs. partisan comments thing. I'd do the same thing if I saw someone mitigate Kinect sales.

Okay, it did not sell at all might have been a little bit harsh. It sold poorly and way below Sonys own estimates then.

A 5 million userbase for something advertised as a "game changer" is bad. So I prefer the bundled Kinect in order to guarantee support for it.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Because without Kinect 2.0 it would rival PS4 as the most boring, most predictable next-gen console.

Why does everyone forget that the PSEye is optional with the Move? The Xbox and Playstation have been at parity in offerings since the Xbox was created. They have a tug of war over services and peripherals because MS is going after the same crowd Sony commanded.

The Kinect and Move were created to combat the Wii? Yes to the Kinect, for sure. The Eyetoy existed two years before the Wii ever came out, so technically Sony wasn't copying Nintendo, but rather upgrading their product for the next generation. Microsoft took Sonys seconds when they bought Primesense, whom Sony had turned down because they had no answer for tracking 1:1 in a 3D realm without making your games seem like a simple minigame. Sony had been developing the Move since 2004, but the Wii helped influence their industrial design decisions for the secondary camera tracked peripheral. The vid doc is up on Youtube.

No one saw the eyetoy and said hey, we need to be able to compete with that or we are losing a ton of potential customers.  On the other hand nintendo risked their entire console's success with their motion controls and because they succeeded sony and microsoft had to at least try to compete with the wii. Things are prototyped all the time without ever seeing release. Imagine if the wii ended up being a huge failure and showed that no one wanted motion control gaming. Guess what device would have forever stayed a prototype. The wii was revolutionary, and the move just seems like a cash in considering how abbysmal support has been for the platform. It seems like Sony just wanted to sell a bunch of prepherials at a profit and forget that the device ever existed. It doesn't matter who started developing what first. It matters who took the big risk and was successful with the product first.

As for your comment about Microsoft taking seconds. Judging by the success of the kinect and the current irrelevancy of the move, it just sounds like Sony made a terrible decision when they decided to turn down Primesense. They basically allowed the xbox 360 to have a second life and stay relevent for an extra 3 to 4 years when they could have ended up easily winning the generation had they incorperated and advertised the kinect into the playstation 3 platform as well as microsoft did so with the 360. Turning a design down that ends up being successful is just bad news for the company that turned it down.

The kinect and move were invented to compete with the wii remote. Simple as that. Microsoft had already succeeded in taking a significant chunk of sony's crowd prior to the kinect launch. Though they could lose them again this coming generation.

Anyway for the thread question, the 360 kinect has already proven that kinect can sell fine on it's own. Bundled or not 25million people payed at least $100 extra for the kinect device than they would have if they chose to skip it. What that means is that microsoft is risking losing potential sales by people who are admanent about not wanting kinect or want the cheapest console just to foster more innovation on the platform. Basically Microsoft wants to bundle the kinect with every single xbox so the userbase doesn't get fragmented. Short term it will probably hurt sales. But the long term goal is for xbone owners to view the kinect as something that is vital for the system and that will only happen if more developers are willing to innovatively incorperate the kinect.

Imagine if when the nintendo ds came out, there was a cheaper model that didn't have a touch screen. Games that just use the touch screen for inventory management and such would hardly be affected. But games that make extensive use of the touch screen like warioware, brain age, World ends with you, professor layton, elite beat agents, etc. would have probably never come out or been completely different. Add on prepherials are an increased risk to develop for because they decrease the pool of potential buyers for your game.

Personally the original kinect never impressed me and I would have loved for it to have been a huge failure that microsoft swept under the rug. But that isn't what happened. So if there must be a new kinect, it just makes sense to bundle it with every xbox. Because that is the best way for the kinect to be an attractive platform to develop real games for. That is why I wish sony bundled the move with all playstation 4's. I think the move works well with the games I've tried, but being a seperate addon almost guarantees that only first party games will make good use of it.

@ bolded:  No, Sony had prototypes of different motion controls but could not think of a way to do anything with it until Nintendo showed them what to do.  Do you know you can go back to 1994 and there is a video form MS labs with motion controls similar to the Wii and Move.  It does not matter if a company researched something if they could not bring it to market.  Sony could not visualize the pontential of the product unitl Nintendo showed them the way, then they scrambled to provide an answer.  This is why companies that take the risk and become successful, reap the rewards.

As for Sony turning down primesense, same situation. Sony might have had prototypes with motion hands free controls but could not figure out a way to bring it to market so it was left on the R&D floor.  Does this mean the technology was not sound, NO.  It means Sony did not have the people, technology or vision to make it happen.  For a company that has turned down motion hands free gaming, it appears Sony got their grove back with the PS4eye and now is touting they can do hands free.  I do enjoy the move for the games I used it for but lets not kid ourselves that Sony does not make moves because a competitor has a popular product.  Lets not kid ourselves that all these companies will say anything to deflect a popular product by a competitor but then the next moment they get a chance, they are adding that part they dismissed like no one remember their previous statements (rumble, hands free gaming).

Back on subject.... I don't see how a 100 bucks makes that big of difference.... I have spent more than that on drinks over a weekend back in my college years.... and people have no problem paying 600 on a phone they'll have no use for compared to a cheaper one.... and that will last only 2-3 years....
To me an xb1 will cost me 57 bucks over 7 years.... I don't have many tech device that match that... yeah the ps4 is cheaper... but I don't see a 100 bucks being a big deal for anybody handling their finance properly...

The Xbox was created to be as similar to the Playstation as possible in order to compete for the newly created market Sony created. Technically where it matters the consoles are at parity (hence why Japan does not really care for the Xbox), it just depends on your cup of tea in games. If you like multiplatform games and can afford to shell out money for the consoles its really an incremental battle that comes down to price, graphics and games.

yet what makes me want an XB is neither price nor graphics nor games. it's multimedia integration going further than XB360 does already, MP and XBL improving in quality with more servers and more services/apps, and kinect getting better. well games obviously but that's not the principal element for me I have plenty yet to finish on 360 so I could wait for price drop if it was for games.

if it was the other generic parts of it you speak about I would go for PS4 and since having a Sony product is out of the question I would just go back to PC gaming.

Ps3 was a better media box then 360..PS4 is no slouch in this area either...

Your last sentence is...well, sad beyond belief.
