Forums - Microsoft - Titanfall designer on Xbox exclusivity: "Microsoft is like the Apple of videogames"

"McClandlish also shed a bit more light on the decision to make Titanfall an Xbox exclusive (it'll launch for both Xbox One and Xbox 360 in Q1 2014). "We're a very small team, so we had to pick a platform if we were going to be on consoles," he said, "and Xbox made the most sense."

They do realise that anyone with a brain knows they are lying right?

The Xbox One and the PS4 are both PCs in a box and coding for both of them is no problem at all. If they really really really don't have the resources, then they can ask nicely and EA would provide a few people to help them

I don't like it when I am lied to

"I feel that, in terms of multiplayer and communal gaming, Microsoft is like the Apple of videogames. You can just start your game without finding your disc, you can go to your friend's place and your saves are all there, and with the cloud servers you don't ever have to worry about transferring between hosts or bad latency."

So they obviously didn't get the memo about the 180... No more playing without finding your discs (and cloud saves are on PS4 as well.... and PS3 and Vita)

The game does look rather good, I think I'll probably check it out on PC

I am going to give you a hint about development.  I develop web sites, portals and all types of other stuff.  You would think that creating a web site would be easy right but it’s not.  Every browser has it quirks, support and features.  One slight change between browser can easily increase development time 2 folds.  As the man said, they are a small team that can only do so much.  Risk plays a lot when you are trying to release on unfinished product.  Just because the PS4 and X1 use PC parts they do not share the same development environment, APIs, Tools and Libraries etc.  There are so much to development than just the hardware.  There is also so much time within a day for development as well.  Small developers only have so much time and resources and they usually will side to what they know then what they do not.  If you read the whole interview you would know that the team is very experience with 360 development and PC.  When you need to make money and get a product released, it’s a much easier decision to do what you know then have to many unknowns and fail your first project..  Even the graphics parts between the X1 and PS4 is not the same with one using OpenGL and the other a form of DX11.

So calling the guy a liar when you have no clue what it takes to develop a game probably speaks volumes.  Gamers really should not make statements in an area where they do not have a lot of experience.  Making games just like any development is never Easy, and there are always tough choices a developer has to make to make sure they can continue to make games.

As pointed out by someone else, the 360 version is done by an external team. Even if they couldn't port it easily, they could certainly get EA to port it for them. It is only exclusive because M$ paid them

Does that still nullify my point.  Its their first game.  They have a small experience PC and 360 team.  They made a decision to go with one platform to reduce the cost and risk of development.  Than MS offered them very cheap cloud services that made it possible for them to make their game even better.  If you had read other interviews Respawn pitched their game to both MS and Sony.  I guess MS showed more interest and supported their efforts with a cloud platform that does everything they asked for.  I do not see any lying going on.

Even in your first post you make assumptions like development is free.  You make it sound like Respawn can just pull a trigger and make EA do a port thus spreading their already limited crew even more.  I am sure it’s much easier to put a resource on a 360 project if that resource is experience with the hardware and software than trying to put that resource on another platform where do not have a lot of experience.

As I mentioned, you are making assumptions about a process you have no clue about thinking everything is simple and easy but I am telling you its not.

Journey is as much a moneyhat as the things some people cry about MS doing. They paid a 3rd party company to make a game and took over the IP in return. People here have criticized MS for doing the same thing. It is adorable how studio size and such only comes into play for Sony though. Like I said, never change.

Self publishing is irrelevant. If the exclusive aspect were merely self publishing then Sony wouldn't have the ability to promote the games as "debuting exclusively first on PS4".

Hope those helped.

Journey was published by Sony.  Thatgamecompany was at the time a 2nd party studio.  They are now an indie developer.

Not the same case with Titanfall, a 3rd party studio getting published by a 3rd party publisher.

Like the other guy providing lulz, you're missing the point. I don't have a problem with Sony moneyhatting thatgamecompany, I don't have any issue with what they do. But the things some people whine about MS doing, is the same things Sony does. It's only an issue when MS does it.

You see people here saying MS moneyhatted games like Dead Rising 3 and Minecraft, among others. That's the exact same situation as thatgamecompany. MS publishes those games. The only difference is thatgamecompany was contracted to provide Sony with more than 1 exclusive. On their scale of butthurt, it should rank even higher than Capcom providing one game, etc. But there isn't a peep.

Not to mention, Sony made their break in the industry the same way as MS. Throwing around tons of money for exclusive content and being able and willing to lose tons of their cash hand over fist on underpriced hardware. It would be nice every now and again to read a thread about a MS exclusive without seeing people whining about MS spending money.

Of course they aren't. Sony is moneyhatting this time around.

We're not going to force you into bed with a publisher just to put a digital game on our network when it really isn't necessary to do so =/= moneyhatting, but thanks for playing.

No worries, though. You already annihilated whatever credibility you had when you called Journey a moneyhat. Incubating a fledgling indie inside of Sony Santa Monica and allowing them to go way, way over budget and deadline to make a passion project isn't a moneyhat. Paying a publisher off for the express purpose of killing other versions of their game, is.

I'm sure Microsoft paid a pretty nickel for Titanfall, but could they even offer EA enough money to make it a permanent exclusive? I'm sure it will come to Playstation eventually or at least the sequel will.

Just to be clear 8 digital games that are coming first to PS4 (some of which are already on pc and others that will go to the other consoles) is comparable to keeping large tripple A games exclusive to one platform.

Thatgamecompany was signed to a 3 game contract with sony right after the 5 man team had graduated college. They were given startup funds and a studio at Sony Santa Monica and the most they had working on a project at once was 14 for Journey (their last game). That's a small team and Sony allowed them to make games that wouldn't have existed otherwise. Thatgamecompany's situation isn't unique either - Sony is signing game contracts with game developers straight from college and give them funds to create their games.

Yes it's moneyhatting, but it's not even close to the same situation as Titanfall or Dead Rising. Those games have much larger teams and are being backed by 2 of the biggest publishers in the industry. Those games would have come out for PS4 (I still think Titanfall is a timed exclusive) had Microsoft not paid for exclusivity. You can't say the same about the indie titles that were showed off by Sony on stage- especially since Microsoft did not allow self-publishing at the time.

I'm not saying Sony doesn't pay off for exclusives, but paying for indie development or timed exclusivity for indie titles and paying to keep large tripple A titles exclusive are entirely different things that require a substantially different amount of money.

If Microsoft paid to fund Titanfall and Dead Rising, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but they're paying to keep those titles Xbox exclusive.

And its deplorable when Sony does it as well - but I don't feel like comparing indie titles to Tripple A titles is fair.

@bolded - All that really needed to be said.

@2nd part - we don't know any of these things about either game. Neither Respawn or Crapcom have detailed what they did or did not get from MS.

The deal was supposedly $50 million (according to Pachter, Keighley, etc.) for 12 months exclusivity (according to CBOAT).

1st part: Are you fucking serious?

2nd part: I don't think EA needed start-up money for Titanfall and we know there's as large of an audience for shooters on the PS as there is on Xbox. EA is basically limiting their sales by half by only releasing on one console and it's not unreasonable to imagine that money was involved. (Just to be clear: releasing one console apparently also includes the 360 and PC).

Dead Rising - maybe. I don't know if the last game was considered a sucess for them or not.
