Forums - Nintendo - Are Pikmin 3 FW sales proof enough for you that the Wii U is not doomed?

It doesn't prove anything, really. 22k is still really low and its unlikely to maintain even that level of sales. The game itself is also unlikely to have legs as it isn't a very popular IP and the install base is too low to support it.

We've seen it with Vita. It gets a semi-big game once in a while and it gets a nice boost only to drop back down to "normal" a few weeks later. What's the next biggest Wii U release that can actually make any sort of difference?

That's what I wanted to say. Vita has shown similar patterns, good boosts only single big titles but fell back after some time. Anyways, as the end of the year looks a bit better games-wise I think the WiiU can stabilize on a higher niveau. But not high enough to be a substantial hurdle to the PS4 or XBOne to overcome in sales.

No one thought that the 3DS would dominate anything, yet now it certainly seems like it is set to do that. Has done very well this year.

What are you talking about?  Plenty of people thought it could dominate and perform like the DS.  Even a few months ago people were still championing the "selling faster than the DS" mantra despite it only being true in the US, and even then only because it hadn't hit the 2006 holidays yet.

Last year (in the prediction thread) only 3 people predicted lower than the actual sales.  And when I say lower, it was 14m/14m/13m, compared to 14.4 million sales.  Compared to 57 people expecting higher sales.  28 of them expecting 20 million or more.  Even for this year, the average prediction is 15.66 million.  If the 3DS manages to blow things out of the water this holiday, there will still be at least a few who predicted higher.

The 3DS hasn't even hit a single one of Nintendo's forecasts.  I don't know where you get the impression that every single person thought the 3DS would do worse than it is.

I won't call domination this year (obvious reasons).  However, I expect Wii U to dominate PS4 and Xbox one next year once MK and Smash are released.

Hmm, depending on the definition of 'domination' I might be willing to bet against that.

I think this is fantastic.. I also think from here out the Wii U will sell better numbers.. averaging 30-40 someodd K a week.. that is not great.. but it is better.. and in the coming years it will get better as more games come out.. Also I don't understand why some say the Wii U will do Gamecube numbers.. Wii U has titles such as Wii Fit U.. and Wii Party U.. which will appeal more to the base that bought the Wii... I am not saying.. that Nintendo will dominate by any stretch of the means.. but I do believe the Wii U will do better than Gamecube.. because as many people who are waiting for that next awesome Zelda on Wii U.. there are just as many that would be happy once Wii Fit.. Wii Party.. and especially if they announced a Wii Sports U... who knows.. at that point Wii U may surprise everyone.. and become the Wii of this generation.. or at least finish a heck of a lot stronger than what most people seem to think....

Nintendo Wii by generations...

1. Wii

2. Wii U

3. Wii O U

Predictions made by gamers concerning the current Nintendo line up of games.

Pikmen 3= Little Bump to nothing. (Got Little Bump)

Wind Waker HD= Won't sell anything (The explosion happened here and at one time 4 Wii U games was in the Amazon top 100)

Super Mario 3D World= Won't help at all looks cheap. (Currently the most sought after Wii U game and continuing the Wii U increase.)

Proves that it can do so well as GC, or the proportional in game market.
In total sales can pass N64.

N64 was considered a very successful system in its time. Not as big as the PS of course, but still successful. I did not know until a few years ago that the PS sold so much more than the N64. I thought the N64 was way more popular. I guess people just had a lot of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark Parties, so it seemed like everyone had one.

Anyways. When the Wii U does better than that, people will finally be somewhat satisfied.

N64 was actually pretty popular in America. It's in the rest of the world where PlayStation really dominated. I think Wii U should have no problem exceeding N64, especially in Japan.

How many more games are going to be claimed 'the one that will save the wiiu' only to not meet expectations then be excused as 'well you cant expect a single game to fix things' thats nintendos entire problem, withoit third part titles to prop up the quiet periods, even if nintendo fans dont want to admit it, nintendo doesnt have the time or the franchise base to pull off single handedly satiating an entire hd platform.

until theres a aaa game per month youll simply see a small spike in unit sales with each release and back to little after that, when the xbox one and ps4 launch that spike is going to get smaller and smaller too

i have pikmin 3, i was one of those 100k ish that bougt it, and its about the first time my wiiu got switched on in months.

only to be switched off again an hour later

I read that same crap you're saying two years ago, except it was about 3ds.

Oh dude, you got me all wrong, I am as hadcore as it gets. My PS3 has a 750gb HD, which is awesome to enjoy the free plus games and discounts, I just bought the Lego Pirates and Batman 2 games for 5 dollars each, here in Brazil they cost 50 dollars each at retail.

As I said, Nintendo is very cool and it will be fine. althought, to the general gamer, the money will go to the better deal. Believe me, i am not a fanboy, I thought about buying a WiiU a lot of times, I love new consoles, but, to me is not appealing yet.

I just think you're assuming much. You are thinking the general consumer cares about having a really big HDD and is willing to pay extra for it. I dont think that is the case.

I can buy all sorts of games on the cheap on amazon aswell. I dont need to pay a lifetime ps plus sub to do it. Also online play is free on the Wii U while its paid on the PS4. That is another piece of monetary motivation you are underestimating.

The Wii U will be cheaper and have more must-have titles next year. Of course, that can change the following year but with the current information that is the case.

I will remind you that Microsoft also assumes consumer will want the more expensive Xbox one because of the kinect. As someone said, assumption is the mother of all f*** ups.

Uhh yeah people spend more money for bigger numbers all the time!  Are you kidding lol?  (Not saying they are always smart to, but come on they do)

More must have titles in 2014?  The PS4 has: The Division, MGSV, The Elder Scrolls Online, Dragon Age 3, FFXV, The Witcher: The Hunt, Diablo III, InFamous, and whatever other first party titles they haven't announced yet (I would guess at least 2).  There is no way Nintendo will match this list of games.  Fact.

I am not dissing the Wii U, but some people really need a reality check; No offense (And I mean it).

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

[Prediction Made 6/18/2014]

And it's not just the Wii series either. GC also didn't have games like NSMB, DKC, the Yarn games, etc, nor were there any remakes, and the system wasn't bundled with a game. Staple franchises like Mario Kart and Smash Bros. have also grown since GC, so they should have more of an impact.

Yes of course

the ps4/xone will have their share of struggling. it will be incredibly hard to overcome wii u sales.
